There were some eye-opening remarks from Bryant Gumbel on the most recent episode of HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. According to a transcript posted by a television columnist named Seth Frelich, Gumbel said the following in his closing monologue last week (emphasis mine):
"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who dont care about them and wont watch them ... Because theyre so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the worlds greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that somethings not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in whats called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day theyre done, when we can move on to March Madness for Gods sake, let the games begin."
Wasn't Herschel Walker on the US Bobsled team?
Hey Bryan, the lack of whites makes the USA summer Olympics basketball team look like the NBA.
"Gumbel is just like OJ, he only remembers he's "black" when it's convenient for him."
very good observation!
Bryant
Or should we mention the pro football and basketball color scheme? Gumbel is a gumball with as many brains.
Bryant Gumbel is still on the air?
Fashion note here: Dog collars are so out, even for dogs. She should go for a jeweled halter.
thinking Matt Lauer was cute was before I started really paying attention to politics...and he still had hair back then. Some hair, anyway.
I'd pay to see him ski jump and land on that big empty coconut of his!
What an a-hole!
Based upon his history, I am not sure he can read.
That would be the NBA All Star game, but any sportscaster who said that on TV would be fired on the spot, and rightfully so.
I agree with Gumball in that I don't give a damn about the Winter Olympics, or the Summer Olympics for that matter. I gave up on both long ago. Over hyped, Over produced and overly professional. There was a time when you could root for some 20 year old kid who busted his ass trying to get really good at something while still leading a normal life. But now they are 20 year old millionaires groomed from day one like some sort of livestock and living the furthest from a normal life as possible.
Gumball's fixation on race shows him for what he is -- a damn bigot, not a sports fan.
"Bryant Gumbel is still on the air?"
I was a bit surprised by that also. I see his brother doing NFL pre-game shows and, oddly, he doesn't bug me.
Actually there are quite a few, the NY Ranger's goalie, Kevin Weekes being one of them.
Not to mention (arguably) the best hockey player in the NHL, Jarome Iginla has a Nigerian father
Regardless, Gumbel is a racist idiot.
To paraphrase Chris Rock (on black athletes domination of American sports):
"If they make a heated hockey rink, we'll dominate that too"
Two relevant facts:
a) for some reason, not too many black people seem to be into winter sports. You don't see many (in relative numbers)blacks that are involved in sports with skates, sleds or skis. There have been a few over the years, but not many that I can recall.
b) if there are blacks involved in sports that involve skates, sleds and skis, then these are some particularly WEALTHY black folks, as these tend to be expensive sports with few facilities in the inner city (try to find a skating rink or a downhill slope in Bedford-Stuyvesanr, for example).
And, just for fun;
I would surmise that if there was a "Drive-By Biathalon", the Crips and Bloods would be perrennial medal contenders.
Get on with yer bad Oreo self, Bryant.
"The racist and and wife. How hypocritically ironic"
Gumball is such an oreo that his white wife COULD go back.
Remember...only whites can be racist...
Like the lottery: You have to play to win.
WELL SAID.
