There were some eye-opening remarks from Bryant Gumbel on the most recent episode of HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. According to a transcript posted by a television columnist named Seth Frelich, Gumbel said the following in his closing monologue last week (emphasis mine):
"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who dont care about them and wont watch them ... Because theyre so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the worlds greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that somethings not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in whats called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day theyre done, when we can move on to March Madness for Gods sake, let the games begin."

Re post 18 ... what you said ...
Actors, newcasters, and other 'personalities' lose my interest when they begin to project that they are the reason that people tune into a show. Bryant Gumbel was pretty good when he started out, but then got to full of huimself. Many others have done the same.
The public (which contains about 70% white people) won't sit around and listen to such racist drivel. And frankly, Gumble is about as poignant and interesting to watch as an Avocado waiting to ripen.
I have contacted HBO. Gumbel has be an anti-white racist for years. Let's see if he gets the "Rush Limbaugh" or "John Rocker" treatment from the liberal media.
It' a racist comment pure and simple and he should be forced to apologize. He won't becuase there is a huge doubple standard in this country.
Spike Lee, Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson can say whatever they want and there is zero accountability. Until enough pressure and outrage is put upon these racists, its just going to keep happening.
Watcha' gonna do about it whitey????
What a racist! Personally I cheer for the USA team whether its the basketball team in the summer Olympics or the Hockey team in the Winter Olympics. The players skin color, or lack of, doesn't matter because I am cheering for "AMERICANS", Mr. Gumbel!
Have a white broadcaster go the the NBA finals and say something like, "it looks like a prison gym" and see what kind of hellstorm breaks loose.
Synchronized swimming and gymnastics from the summer olympics?
"You don't see many (in relative numbers)blacks that are involved in sports with skates, sleds or skis."
I don't think it is race as much as it is money. Skiing and figure skating are expensive sports requiring more equipment and/or individual coaching. Hockey is also more expensive than basketball, baseball or football. When you hear the touching personal stories of the athletes at the Winter Olympics, it sounds like most of them were raised in Upper or Middle Class homes.
You know that word was banned in DC ever since the mayor's white assistant tried using it at a meeting once.
Well, Mr. Gumbel, you are a throwback to your own stereotype.
Funny. I was thinking that the Winter Olympics line-up looked similar to the ethnicity of what HBO and Air America put on the air.
I agree - Greg Gumbel seems to be cut from entirely different clothe than his older, dumber brother. Greg seems like the kind of guy you could sit down with and watch "the game" - Bryant seems like the kind of guy everybody in the room would be yelling at to "SHUT UP" in about five minutes.
Get him on a hockey rink, I'll take care of him. Oh yeah, that's right...blacks don't play hockey. WELL, THIS ONE DOES. And so does at least one pro black player, Donald Brashear (though there are many more), who would skate around him and through him in a minute.
"Gumble is about as poignant and interesting to watch as an Avocado waiting to ripen"
LMAO. I will be using that line.
He probably thinks that all black women have large butts.
Do not apologize, Mr. Gumbel. Whatever you do do not apologize. Free speech means never having to say you are sorry. It's refreshing to see that you have the courage to shed light on your true beliefs.
Oh yeah, you're fired. - HBO
