Israeli military protested at Berlin festival

Amnesty International volunteers are using the Berlin Film Festival to criticize the Israel Defense Forces. Berlin members of the human rights organization staked out screenings of two Israeli films this weekend, collecting signatures demanding that Israel “establish an alternative civilian service as it is granted worldwide in many countries.”

Amnesty activist Sibylle Auer, campaigning at a screening of “Close to Home,” a film about the emotional and political dilemmas facing a group of female soldiers in Israel, said the activists are trying to publicize the recent jailing of 18-year-old Uri Natan for refusing to serve.
