"Iraqis hated Saddam, but don't find the unstable, violence-ridden and foreign-occupied postwar Iraq to be much of an improvement."
In a recent poll (heh), 69% of Iraqis said life was "good."
71% said they expected things to continue improving.
The Kurds made a beautiful TV commercial thanking the USA for bringing liberty, perhaps you missed it.
The USA is unpopular in the same way that a loving but strict parent is unpopular (Unpopular until needed). Those countries in the survey look at us and have an inferiority complex, and they have it for good reason.
Many of their risk-takers have come to the USA, draining those countries of leadership, leaving behind those who live to be nursed from cradle to grave, suckling at the government teat.

I'm sure that living under the fear of torture, imprisonment and death was just a little bit more inconveniencing than the situation today. You're right, and living without power, water, or security and having gunfire exchanges in the streets watching your countrymen die every day is much better. I'm not arguing that Saddam was better, just that today in Iraq is certainly not what you are maaking it out to be. Better is not Good, that's what I'm trying to say.

I agree about Opinion Polls. In 2003 and 2004 nearly all Opinion Polls favored Kerry. We all know how that turned out.

Does it matter what the world thinks of us? I think not.

And in a recent poll, only 27% of Iraqis said that the US has a positive influence in the world. See how polls can be distorted like that? I'm not telling you to agree with me nor am I trying to espouse my beliefs here, just stop thinking that your opinion is the only right one and that there is no credibility with anyone who disagrees. The USA is unpopular in the same way that a loving but strict parent is unpopular (Unpopular until needed). The world doesn't need a parent, nor does America need to be one.

"...just stop thinking that your opinion is the only right one and that there is no credibility with anyone who disagrees."
I see, just because you have spoken, I should just fold my tent, and not stand up for my opinions. You have not convinced me that I am wrong yet.
I don't mind that you disagree with me, but you have some very strange ideas IMO, (heh). See you next time, I have to sign off now.

"Wait 'til Iran starts nuking/invading its neighbors, including its European neighbors. Then the only country that has the will and might to help will suddenly be the popular kid again."
Nah... They'll say the USA should've acted sooner.
To: EvilHomer
Basically, a plurality of "old European" states, Islamofascist states, and cocaine growers dislike us. Big fat hairy deal.
Notice that we are well liked in the developing world and emerging democracies. That's what matters to me.

All those countries who hold a negative opinion of the US sure are willing to accept our money.
I think the aid checkbook needs to be closed.

Wow! I wasted my time. You are actually a troll. Good luck to you, troll
To: MNJohnnie
What? You think they just made the whole thing up? And that really the people in these countries just love us?
Yeah, right.
The world hates us and as far I'm concerned they can go f*** themselves.
...(deep breath)
Sorry. Venting.
To: EvilHomer
You should really go to troll charm school, for your present persona has fallen flat.

Wow.... where the heck are you getting your numbers?
From the CIA (2005 purchasing power parity)
US $12.37 trillion
China $8.158 trillion
India $3.678 trillion
Germany $2.446 trillion
UK $1.867 trillion
Canada $1.077 trillion
Mexico $1.066 trillion
Even Ethiopia has a higher GDP in terms of purchasing power ($59 billion) than you say the entire rest of the world has combined. Sure, some countries drop if you look at official exchange rates, but others, like the UK, actually climb.
To: EvilHomer
I wonder if a poll question was "What country would you most like to emigrate to?" and what the results would be?

(Can I quote you on that?)
To: EvilHomer
Respect is far more important than popularity.
Re-run the poll using "respect" as the question...and I bet the results wuld be different.
But the key, not mentioned specifically by BBC, is this ia a poll of "governments" ..... not of the populations of these countries. Most governments are upset because they don't think that we give them enough aid....a sufficient and proper reason to cut off all aid!
