International Poll: US More Popular than Iran

The United States has improved its standing in the eyes of the world during the past year, according to a BBC World Service poll. It is now the second least popular nation in the world, beating out Iran with 13 out of 33 countries polled saying the US has a "mainly positive" influence and 17 saying its influence is "mainly negative." Iran, by comparison, polls 5 for "mainly positive" and 24 for "mainly negative."

The survey asked 39,435 people in 33 countries for their opinions of Britain, China, Europe, France, India, Iran, Japan, Russia, and the United States. Those from Russia, China, India, Britain, and France were not asked about their own countries.

But although the US is up from the 2004 poll, in which it was last among nations in terms of positive influence, it has lost popularity in some key allied nations. In Europe, those expressing a negative view of the US increased in Great Britain (from 50% to 57%), France (from 54% to 65%), and Italy (from 40% to 46%).

The US also lost popularity in the China, with negative ratings rising a full 20 points to 62 percent from 42 percent last year, as well as in Brazil and Australia, where negative opinion has risen to 60%, up from 51% and 52%, respectively.

However, the US did not lose face in all nations polled. Negative opinion fell in Russia (from 63% to 52%) and Turkey (from 62% to 49%), while in Poland, positive opinion has risen from 52 percent in 2004 to 62 percent in 2005.

Perhaps more importantly though, only 27% of Iraqis view America's influence as positive, which is 1% above Iranians, 26% of whom see it as positive.

The margin of error in polling ranged from 2.5% to 4%.

Wait 'til Iran starts nuking/invading its neighbors, including its European neighbors. Then the only country that has the will and might to help will suddenly be the popular kid again.

In that case, I guess the strategy of John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and Hiltery Clinton of defaming America is not working.

This reporter is obviously an idiot.

How so? People in 33 countries from North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe were asked for their opinions. Here's the official poll:

Last time I checked there were more than 9 countries in the world. The reporter could have said, "The U.S. is the 8th most popular country in the world." He would have been wrong in that case too.

So there's a correction: "International Poll: US Second Least Popular Nation Out Of All Counties In The World Whose Decisions Impact It"

Someone needs to inform the Mexicans that they need to sneak into Britain, China, France, India, Japan, Russia, and Italy, prior to sneaking into the United States.

2004...US GDP $9.92 trillion.. rest of the world $55 billion, some 180 times that of the rest of the world combined. Its our successfulness and standard of living the world hates.

Too bad that would involve crossing an ocean or being rejected by those nations' intolerant, ethnocentric societies, or both. Coming to America is a matter of convenience, not necessarily desire. I'm sure most Mexicans would be glad enough to go to Britain, if they could swim accross the Atlantic.

If the Euroweenies are starting to take a shine to us, we must be doing something wrong. Maybe we should nuke Paris.

Naw, that would just make most of them like us more. They hate the French too.

Now why do I suspect the poll is skewed. How many people are emigrating to these other most loved paradises, while we, the most reviled, can't keep them out.

Just because there's more economic opportunity here for poor people from the third world doesn't mean that foreign countries approve of us. It just means our economy is better.
