Store Ordered To Repaint Window Frame

NASHVILLE, Ind. -- Officials in the rustic southern Indiana tourist town of Nashville are ordering a store owner to repaint a bright blue window frame.

Nashville's nine-member Development Review Commission has told the owners of J Bob's that they have until Aug. 1 to repaint the window frame to a more appropriate color.

The owner's daughter said her 79-year-old father repainted the window before leaving for a winter vacation in Florida. She said her mother got a call complaining about the color and thought the whole thing was silly.

The president of the Development Review Commission said they are coming up with a palate of acceptable colors for the town.

J Bob's sells merchandise including hot sauce and troll dolls to tourists who arrive each fall to look at the changing leaves.

This just really struck a cord today for me when I read this. Did I wake up in China this morning? WTF right does a bunch of busy bodies have to tell a shop owner that his window frame is the wrong color and has to repaint it - As a business owner myself I bet I could make at least a couple of those members cry by the time I was finished with them.

Why did the town accept a "Development Review Commission"? Were they paying attention? What is it they say... eventually you get the government that you deserve.

palate of acceptable colors

Just chew some celery, yellow peppers and a couple of tomatoes and that should do it.

A lot of "Historic Districts" or "Preservation Sites" around the country have codified zones where only acceptable architecture or appearance has defined by a "Commission" is allowed.

In Boston the MBTA has been trying to put in 'required' handicap enterance/exit to the subway stop at Copely Square but the "Back Bay Neighborhood Association" objects to the placement and it's aesthetics.

They want a fake, hokey, rural look to the place because it is a tourist town so all personal rights go out the window.

I'd dig in my heels on this one.

Wait a sec. You have to know Nashville, Indiana. It is a historical "show" town, modeled on the early 20th century America. Each shop and store displays the historical heritage of the town. A pure tourist attraction. I can assure you when this owner purchased the property he was well aware of the covenant requiring him to maintain the historical look and feel of the property.

"The president of the Development Review Commission said they are coming up with a palate of acceptable colors for the town. "

Apparently they don't have such a set of colors, though. So, is the storeowner supposed to be a mind reader?

I'd leave the window as it is and wait for the colors to be announced. Then, I'd choose two from the set of colors that would look the worst together and paint the whole darned place those colors and let them steam.

Well that's just great. Millions of fanatical, America-hating Islamofascists are rioting all over the world, the Democrat Party is in league with anti-American forces both within and outside our country, and all the Nashville Development Review Commission can think about is what color windowsills should be painted.

I think that Commission should be disbanded and its members encouraged to inform themselves about some real problems.

What's the point of a story like this being in the news if they don't have a photo?

The president of the Development Review Commission said they are coming up with a palate of acceptable colors for the town.

Coming up with? As in, it doesn't exist today? Sounds like an ex post facto law. Advantage: J Bobs.

But if they really are forced to repaint, and the city gives them a palette of colors, I say, paint the frame with ALL of the colors in the palette. Yeah, alternating stripes of each color.

Reminds me of the guy who ran up against the "Nazi Homeowners" association that told him to re-paint his house from the list of "approved" colors when he painted his house a "un-approved " color. He did exactly as you said. He chose the most garish combination of "approved' colors and they couldn't say a thing !...........

And they didn't have blue paint back then? Heck, how would we know unless they had a painting of the place from that era, all the pictures would be black and white anyway.

I have been to Nashville and was not impressed. Some of those shops are just trashy.

There's always a way. Another strategy could be to choose two "approved" colors and paint the building with diagonal stripes or polka-dots of those "approved" colors. Either would make the point clearly.

Of course, it would cost some money and you'd probably want to repaint again soon, but the point would be made.
