FReeper Canteen ~ Military Short Speak ~ Feb. 6, 2006
(Thanks Bro!) | Sweet Polly Purebread

Posted on 02/05/2006 6:58:31 PM PST by StarCMC

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT
Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allies military and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

********

That's right - the Canteen mission
Support the troops and all they do
They've given up so much
All for me and you

There are so many here
Who keep the aim sure and true
They support the troops
And have lots of fun too

We dance and play
And spin on our toes
A turn of phrase
A joke or some prose

All for the troops
Who visit and  bask
Looking for a friend
A break from their task

So thanks to my friends
You know who you are
This army sister's brother
Is home from the war

You made my life easy
You taught me some things
You brought me such peace
You gave me wings

I'll always hold dear
The ones who have cared
Who gave me their true friendship
Thank you FReeper Canteen.

A special tank designed as a sort of "wrecker" for tanks. What they are able to do is almost a miracle.

Reveille

A signal to awaken, get out of bed and begin the day. Often a bugle call, in boot camp more often the yells and screams of Drill Instructors and the sounds of GI cans crashing to the deck.

ALONE AND FAR REMOVED

Alone and far removed from earthly care
The noble ruins of men lie buried here.
You were strong men, good men
Endowed with youth and much the will to live
I hear no protest from the mute lips of the dead.
They rest; there is no more to give.

So long my comrades,
Sleep ye where you fell upon the field.
But tread softly please
March o'er my heart with ease
March on and on,
But to God alone we kneel.

. . . Audie Murphy

One more...

undefined

"In 1948, I returned to France at the invitation of French Government. It was still a war-ravaged country ... but this time there was something different. It wasn't the absence of fighting, nor the silence of the big guns, nor the disappearance of uniforms and chow lines ... I didn't know what it was until one morning when I was taken to the grounds of a small French school. The children had been assembled in the play yard. They were grouped close together and arranged in wobbly little rows, their dark heads bobbing around like flower buds on long stems. One of the teachers rapped for silence. The kids quieted immediately and turned their eyes towards her. Their Faces were scrubbed and bright in the sunshine. The teacher raised her arms, and for a moment, there was no sound ... Then the teacher brought her arms down and the kids began to sing ... I Knew why I felt at home. The spirit of freedom was hovering over that play yard as it did all over France at that time. A country was free again. A people had recovered their independence and their children were grateful. They were singing in French, but the melody was freedom and any American could understand that. America, at that moment, never meant more to me ... The true meaning of America, you ask? It's in a Texas rodeo, in a policeman's badge, in the sound of laughing children, in a political rally, in a newspaper... In all these things, and many more, you'll find America. In all these things, you'll find freedom. And freedom is what America means to the world. And to me."
