Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).
So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.
If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.
Here's a few helpful links.
C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.
C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.
C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.
C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.
OR FEDNET has online feed also.
A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).
THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]
Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority
And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

LOL. They managed to get that chaos into a transcript!
Ummm Obama .. to get a tax credit .. doesn't one have to pay taxes first?
I was thinking the same thing when Obama was talking...
All he wants to do is pay more money to people that pay NO TAXES at all...IOW..people with money GIVE money to people who don't.
NOW..I can't help but chuckle...because at the end of his speech, he said that the FED GOVT. should be as "generous" as the American people were in giving to the charities after Katrina...
WHO does Obama thing the FED GOVT is??? hmmmmmmmm???
ALSO...I have heard story after story about how businesses in NO are having to close early...because they have no employees....and yet Obama wants us to GIVE more money to businesses...who would have no employees???
Also...he mentioned that FEMA was going to STOP paying for shelter...not true...FEMA is going to stop DIRECT payment to hotels and motels where the people are living...not to them.
OBAMA is truly a socialism guy, folks...and the MSM will try to frame him as a moderate that can work with both sides...
BOTH sides if you count only the squishy Rinos, maybe.
You don't see people in Florida running from the state after all of the hurricanes down there
I watched a few minutes of this morning's hearing about Katrina.
I am soliciting opinions about these hearings....I heard Lieberman EXCLAIMING over and over today how SHOCKED he is about the "waste and fraud" in the aftermath of Katrina...
BUT, I don't know if anyone has brought up the waste and fraud that CAUSED a big part of the levees that broke, which in turn caused a majority of the damage and death.
NOW...this fraud happened decades ago up to the present...and the CONGRESS was aware of the funding and problems making sure that the funding was going to where it was necessary to go to...so, my question is this???
Why isn't there a panel asking CONGRESS why they fell down on THEIR jobs...in forcing NEW ORLEANS to reinforce those levees with the money that WE the PEOPLE have given them???
Also, do you think that there will be a chance that voters will be on "hearing and investigation overload"...by the time the 2006 and 2008 elections roll around...and that voters might be so sick of the dems and their calling for hearing after hearing about EVERYTHING that has happened, since Bush was elected in 2000, will come back to hurt them??
That is SO true...and also Obama kept saying that Bush promised relief for the POOR in NO...
I think the POOR in New Orleans that made it out...no thanks to Mr. Chocolate Nagin...have decided that living in other states, with more stable local government, better schools, and JOBS...won't be going back.
SOOOOOO...I don't know where that 275 MILLION that Obama wants will go...
and of course, that is probably ON TOP of the 250 BILLION that Landrieu wants.
BTW...I wonder what DID happen to all of the charity money that Clinton and Bush supposedly have raised???
Regarding Katrina....I just heard Rhandi Rhodes on AirAmerika...and she said that she lived in Florida during hurricanes...
and the "lily whites" were treated quite well by FEMA and the fed govt....and it is ONLY because NO is predominately black that FEMA didn't do what it was supposed to do...and President Bush STAYED on vacation....
ewwwwwwww
Mr. ENSIGN. Mr. President, I make a point of order that the pending bill violates section 407 of H. Con. Res. 95, the concurrent resolution on the budget for fiscal year 2006.Mr. SPECTER. I move to waive the point of order under the applicable provisions of the rules and statutes.
The route to the statutory expression of the 3/5ths requirement is actually direct, not indirect as I posted above.

H.CON.RES.95.ENR - Enrolled as Agreed to or Passed by Both House and Senate
Mr. FRIST. Mr. President, tomorrow the Senate will complete consideration of the pending motions to instruct the conferees on H.R. 4297, the tax relief bill, and send that bill to conference. We will have multiple votes starting close to 10 a.m. Senators should plan to stay around the floor for a series of up to 16 stacked votes in the morning. There is a pending motion to waive the Budget Act that must be disposed of before we can move forward with the amendment process.
Cloture MotionWe the undersigned Senators, in accordance with the provisions of rule XXII of the Standing Rules of the Senate, do hereby move to bring to a close debate on the pending substitute amendment to Calendar No. 131, S. 852: a bill to create a fair and efficient system to resolve claims of victims for bodily injury caused by asbestos exposure, and for other purposes.

10 . FAIRNESS IN ASBESTOS INJURY RESOLUTION ACT OF 2005
Mr. FRIST. Mr. President, today, I would briefly like to recount the details of a troubling series of events that resulted in the capture of four Americans, one of whom was executed, in the jungles of Colombia. I recently received word of this story from a special operations officer with intimate knowledge of these and subsequent events. ...For 3 years, three brave American civilian contractors have been held hostage by a ruthless terrorist organization deep in the Colombian jungle. Though rescue attempts can be dangerous and entail numerous risks to both the hostages and the rescuers, the failure to launch more than one serious rescue attempt is a disservice to those men and to their families here at home. We can only imagine the anguish, uncertainty, and doubt they have endured for those 3 long years.
I urge the administration to redouble its efforts to rescue these three Americans. A more assertive response is required. We owe it to these men and to their families to make a more serious effort to rescue them.
[Isn't this the Congress meddling with the Executive?]

Thanks for that info
Did Wyden's amendment about the tax breaks for oil companies just pass a voice vote?
Senator Reed of RI is now up, having 2 minutes of debate to argue for his motion to instruct. Grassley rebuts in that the motion to remove a tax benefit in 2009 in order to fund military supplies now is silly.
The tax in question is tax on dividends at a rate of 15%. This will be a roll-call vote.
A Wyden amendment passed, but I don't know what its substance is.
A Wyden amendment passed, but I don't know what its substance is. ...
2/13/2006: Motion by Senator Wyden to instruct Senate conferees to insist on a provision that repeals accelerated depreciation for geologic and geophysical costs for oil and gas exploration by the 5 major oil companies made in Senate. That link has ALL of the proposed amendments, associated with their sponsoring Senator.
