The Senate meets at noon today, again in Executive Session, for the 3rd day of debate on the nomination of Samuel Alito to SCOTUS. Not sure, what, if anything, will happen today..Will there be a filabuster?..will anyone show up..might be work while checking out the beginning of the session, to get the lay of the land....

Don't know, cboldt...is Stevens for or against. I read some posts just now saying he announced for, and others that sound panicky that he went against. If he is a yes vote, that NOW makes 56 declared yes.

  A. Future Nominations. Signatories will exercise their
responsibilities under the Advice and Consent Clause of the
United States Constitution in good faith. Nominees should only
be filibustered under extraordinary circumstances, and each
signatory must use his or her own discretion and judgment in
     determining whether such circumstances exist.

It's now 56-33.. but given Steven's statements, we can safely say it's about to be 56-34

"56 YEA..4 more yea and filibuster fails..am I correct?"

There are actually 55 "votes".

They only help if there are 60 at cloture and none of them turncoat (several democrats included) and vote against cloture.

And what's so disheartening is that the wimpy Republican leadership in the Senate will allow the slimes to get away with it.

Given that Frist has already taken care of this, your accusation makes no sense.

Another Democrat For Alito?
[Ed Whelan 01/27 11:42 AM]

From AP:

Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., also announced Friday he is "leaning in favor of voting for'' the conservative judge. "It is clear to me that a majority of the American people and the people I represent support his confirmation,'' he said after meeting with Alito in his office.

Frist filed a cloture motion and the cloture vote is set for 4:30 pm Monday ET. If cloture passes (shuts off debate), the actual nomination vote is already scheduled for 11:00 am Tuesday ET. Those in the know say Alito will be sworn in immediately and then we have the Supremes showing up for the SOFTU speech. Sweet...

Well, there's an agreement that means nothing...we'll filubuster under extraordinary circumstances, and each of us will decide what those are.

Speaking of the Viet Nam vet, WHO DID NOT WIN, his boy Rassman is furious that her heinous is coming to Oregon to fundraise.

The local dems are complaining that she is taking money away from the local candidates.

There are several Dems who have said they will vote no on confirmation, but that they will not support a filibuster. If you add up all those who will vote yes on cloture, I don't think it will be that close. It passes, and Alito passes by a lesser margin.

They're are a number of dems that will vote for cloture and vote against Alito for appointment.
They don't want to filibuster but they only need to get the kooks of their backs and the two nutbags from MA are leading the charge. I'd hate to be a staffer these past two weeks. These guys can't get anything done because their staff is answering calls from Move-on, DU, Kos Kidz et al.

This may have been asked and answered but here goes.......

If the cloture vote Monday at 4:30 is held and all the gang of 14 (7) Democrats vote present instead of NO on the filibuster will it still require 60 votes to invoke cloture?

Anyone?
