"Maybe it was Priscilla Owens, since she is white."

Yes. He voted for Owen and Pryor. However, he's so desperate for re-elect, he may vote for Brown if she were up today. LOL

We know the Senators HATE working on Friday...

Saturday and Sunday even worse. They're trapped, pure and simple. The calculus now is how to make the loss look like a win, see, e.g., "Gang of 14" that permitted votes to go ahead, when they really wanted the nominations to be dropped cold.

Kavanaugh was renominated yesterday, BTW (posted on the Senate monthly thread)

LOL. DCer's now leaving the Democratic party and becoming Independents--no more donations, no more support, no more nothing for the Demmies--will contribute to Byrd's GOP opponent...tells the DNC to 'shove it' (rest censored). I can hear Howard Dean now. "Come back! Come back! I'll fix it! I'll fix it all!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" I'm laughing so hard I have real tears coming out of my eyes. :*)

No, The Senate rules on filibusters currently require that 60% of the senators seated must vote FOR cloture. Nobody has to show up to vote against cloture.

It used to be 2/3rds of those PRESENT, which made it easier to break filibusters because even though it was fewer people, they all had to be there.

With the new rules, all that is required is a SINGLE senator to carry the filibuster and to make sure nobody slips in a unanimous consent request.

I will note that, under that rules, if there were no democrats on the floor, Specter could have just asked the chair for unanimous request, the chair could have immediately ruled that he heard no objection, and the deed would be done.

The democrats would be furious, but it could have been done. That is why I always say that the senate rules are written for honorable adults, which are sorely lacking in the democrat senate delegation (witness that trick Reid pulled calling the senate into executive session -- he acted like he was so clever, but the fact is that ANYBODY could do that ANY TIME, and the only reason it never happened before WAS NOT becuase he was smart, but because nobody else has been CHILDISH enough to pull a prank like that).

Too bad a mouse couldn't be let loose during the speech right under Senator CLinton's chair - how much do you want to bet the "f_ng b" words would fly!

Been skimming fast...what's this about Kerry filabustering?

He's trying to gather 41 opposers. It won't happen. Nothing said on the floor of the Senate about that - news reports, from what I gather.

Mumbles Obabma up.

My friend just called me to report Hannity is quoting the ''DU underground'' on his show is threatening that any RAT that doesn't stand for a filibuster will not make it as a presidential candidate in the RAT party. .....This must be why Kerry is in a panic to filibuster.........

Eugene is running for district republican chairman for the 10th district (that's Frank Wolf's district). It's a pretty heated race between a moderate who has been resting on the laurels of a solidly red district, and a guy who wants to get into action before it becomes another fairfax county.

As of a half hour ago.

ALITO UPDATE [Byron York]

From a Senate source: It now looks like Democrats have decided they cannot sustain even a non-filibuster filibuster over the Alito nomination. Word is, there will soon be an agreement between the parties on how much more time to allot to the debate, after which there will be a vote on confirmation -- no cloture process needed. And Oprah has had to withdraw her support for that guy who pretended his fiction book was real, after she found out that even his "confession" to her turned out to be false.

Funny how so many democrats are getting smacked with the heavy hand of reality today. You'd think that, being in the "reality-based" world, they wouldn't be so shocked about it.

It's using obscure parliamentary rules to draw out the process, hoping something else will kill the nominee/bill.

They've already used this twice, once delaying the committee vote one week now they want to debate the full time even thought they know that don't have enough to block or fully filibuster Alito.
Look for the same thing to happen with the patriot act later this month.
They are conveniently out of the country for a few days. What is John Effing Kerry doing t the Davos Summit in Switzerland? He's skiing, hoping that the vote can be delayed so the president won't have Alito to announce in his SOTU speech. Same with the Democrats hanging out in the middle east "observing" the elections.
It's a delaying tactic similar to what the Texas dems did back a few years ago, they all left the state and refused to vote on reapportionment.

I don't trust Lott either. We have so many people better than either of these two.

I wondered where you were...when I saw that katieanna had started the thread....in fact, I was wondering if it was a duplicate thread...

but, I am really glad ya'll weren't hurt.

There was a sort of face-off between Specter and Reid a few minutes ago...when Specter put in a unanimous consent request to have the vote on Alito Monday at 5:30...because the Dems have no speakers wanting to speak tomorrow...

Reid said he wanted to speak to Frist, not Specter..and Specter said that Frist had sent him...LOL

Anyway...supposedly, Reid will get with Frist..and we will all find out later what will happen after today..
