Judge Alito’s accomplishments in life are the embodiment of the American Dream. I am
honored to introduce him to the committee.
Judge Alito is a young man. If the Senate confirms him for a lifetime appointment to the
Supreme Court, he could serve for three decades – or even longer, especially judging from my
own age. His decisions would affect our rights, the rights of our children, our grandchildren and
other future generations.
Mr. Chairman, as you know, it is the job of this committee to evaluate Judge Alito’s
qualifications and fitness for the Court, including his views on legal issues.
I know every member of the committee takes that obligation seriously, and I trust that
Judge Alito will be forthcoming and cooperative in this process.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.”

Kerry, Other Democrats Threaten Alito Filibuster
Thursday, January 26, 2006

WASHINGTON — Massachusetts Sens. John Kerry and Edward Kennedy, along with a small number of other Senate Democrats, have threatened a filibuster to block the vote for Judge Samuel Alito's confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, FOX News has learned.

But a senior Democratic leadership aide told FOX News that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and a majority of Democrats "do not support this action by Kerry and Kennedy. It is not politically advantageous for us."

Republicans have already said they'll have the 60 votes needed in the Senate to break a filibuster and end the debate, so such a threat probably won't have an impact.

I'm not sure. I had to leave for work before they started talking about that. All I know is what I've been reading here in this thread about cloture and a final vote.

Looks like Kerry jumped the gun a bit too fast.

We can only hope!

A cloture vote, which would end a potential filibuster, is scheduled for Monday at 4:30 p.m. EST; if cloture is approved, the final vote would be scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m EST.

Are they keeping track of those who would vote against Alito, yet not vote for a filibuster?

Thanks, I'll try to stomach taking a peek over at DU.

Byrd must hate the whacko leftists who've taken over his party more than the conservatives in the GOP. I hope he gets an earfull from the dems...

I'm 100% sure that if the cloture motion passes, they Demos will DEMAND the full 100 hours of debate prior to voting, and there aren't enough hours in the day to do that prior to the SOTU address, so the Demos will at least have achieved that.

Precisely.

And you and I both know Frist would give it to them.

I'm sick of him.

I expect cloture to be approved then. Even Dingy Harry isn't insane enough to follow Kerry off a cliff. Cloture will either be invoked by unanimous consent or by a roll call vote with a dozen or so Democrats from Red States voting with the GOP for invocation.

Am I missing something? It sounds mostly like a warning. Christie Whitman ended her remarks with a hope for his confirmation.

Now, a lesbian from Maine does not do such things!
