After several months in this forum, I have never posted a vanity post before and this will be my first time, but I am posting this to find out whether anyone can help me find some moral direction on a life choice dilemma which is not different from the Terry Schiavo case...
I have a friend in Texas who was taking high blood medicine not knowing she was pregnant.
Very early in the pregnancy they took tests and were told that their baby will practically have no brain but being devout christians, they decided to go thru anyway.
Last week their baby was born and as predicted, without a brain but somehow she's breathing and "alive".
Now the parents are having second thoughts and just waiting for her to stop breathing and die.
What would be the most moral thing to do in this situation ?

My younger sister and her husband had two (three-month) premature twin baby boys. They were on life-support systems for almost two months. They did everything they could for the boys. Our family spent everyday with the boys until that time. In the end God took these children home.
I'm not certain of the answer to your question; however, I lift up your request to the One who does.
I'd buy the baby a beautiful crocheted outfit and give it to the parents. Just that simple. A welcoming gift for a child that may not stay long..........
What was the "high blood medicine"?
Do the parents have to decide whether heroic methods are needed to keep the baby alive?

I agree with this. Love and cherish her during what will certainly be a very short life on earth, and comfort each other in your grief with the knowledge that she will be whole in heaven. My prayers are with these suffering parents and their baby.

That's just it. I have a cousin that had some complications early in pregnancy and they advised her to have an abortion. They didn't want one, so then the doctors decided to actually open her up to check things out and it turns out the fetus was fine and they did more damage by opening her up. She had the baby a month ago and both mom and baby are perfectly fine.
If you can talk to a doctor who is not biased and there is undeniable proof of a major problem like this, that's one thing, but these days it would be a challenge to find a doctor who advises having an abortion who is truly not pro abortion. Many times they think they know, and it turns out totally different than what they say.
My prayers are with them.
If you asked what I would do if it were my child to decide about, it would be to love the child as best as I can and to let nature take its course.
If you wanted to know what I would do as a friend, it would be to love the parents, pray, and be for them as they needed. If they asked my opinion, I would tell them what I thought at the beginning. If they needed information about support, nursing, etc., and they asked, I would help them out.
Act with love, act with care, and be supportive. And pray! That's number 1!

I have a close friend who has a cousin born some 24 years ago with this condition. Key word being has and not had. Carrie will turn 25 next month and brings great joy into the lives of many people. She is in a wheelchair and has considerable difficulty communicating, but there is no question that she is completely cognizant, self aware and very much an individual.
This happened to my niece. The baby lived a few days and she was glad to hold him and love him for the short time she had him. Pray for them.
By the way...for all of you who like to talk about Germany being a liberal "lost cause"...
1) Abortion is illegal in Germany.
2) It isn't prosecuted in the first 90 days if a woman obtains counselling for severe distress from a pro-life organization, which have to sign off that they counselled her (begged her to consider adoption).
3) Because it is illegal, there is no state funding for it.
4) Even in the case of rape, after 90 days it is illegal.
5) After 90 days, and because of the Nazi past, deformities and other "defects" are not reason for an abortion. Abortion is a punishable offense after 90 days.
Compare that with the Roe vs Wade USA.
Now, what was anybody saying about "Old Europe" in regard to social conservatism?
I sincerely hope the poster prints off your comments for the parents. They are beautiful and later the parents may need to read them again.
So, it's basically "illegal without consequences". Do you think that would go over well with pro-life people here? :)
...I don't see this as an abortion case, the child has already been born. You said yourself that your friends decided to go through with the pregnancy.
What is the child's life expectancy?
