Canadian General Election, Live Thread (UPDATE: Conservatives Win!)
Elections Canada ^ | N/A

Posted on 01/23/2006 8:03:44 AM PST by GreenLanternCorps

If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

Don't freak out. Atlantic Canada has always been Liberal leaning. Conservative inroads are to be made in Quebec and Ontario.

That plus the traditional conservative Western Canada (except BC)

Things are going about as expected.

Look for a Conservative minority gov't.

My best guess is that he's actually physically in the Maritimes.

Atlantic Canada is dependent on federal handouts. They'd never give up their Liberal crack. Its the perfect form of political servitude and the Liberals appreciate the advantage government dollars can buy them there - in the form of dependable votes in election after election.

The polls are holding so far. That's the good news. The bad news is that in 2004, the polls underestimated Tory support in Atlantic Canada. But it sounds like the polls got the Dipper percentage right this time, which caused a lot of the difference in 2004.

You nailed it. Right across the street from the Red Lantern on the north boundry of the cemetary. You might remember the now torn down Dominion Coal silos on the corner of Mt. Pleasant. I'm just west of there. Cheers, eh!

Good to meet you. To let you know when I was 1 to 3 I lived at a Duplex (now gone) at the Southwest corner of Mt. Pleasant and Davisville. That area sure has changed. Also, my Grandfather is buried in that cemetry.

It a great neighbourhood.

Take care!

I don't understand the results you are posting. Earlier you showed the CPC had 10, now you have posted 8. What gives?

I thought that immigration into France had slowed a great deal. Certainly, if the trends point to a Muslim majority, the French aren't going to encourage further immigration along the lines of the 1960s or even today, and sentiment for expulsions and exclusion will harden. We've been seeing a backlash for at least a decade, and it's not as easy to get into France as it is to cross from Mexico to the U.S. And certainly there are many factors driving Muslim fertility downward in France.

It is exceptionally tricky to project current trends outward to show a minority becoming a majority. There's too much time for the people in power to react and change things, never mind for the minority to change.

Canadian Networks don't wait to "call" results like US ones do - they list who's leading.

Yes, but I suppose it wouldn't really help them if most of Atlantic Canada is on the wrong side of the House in the coming Parliament.

Some of the ridings in New Brunswick are expected to be very close. One or two have been flipping back and forth all night. Avalon in NFLD seems to be a safe pick up.

ElectionPrediction.org predicted 8 for the Conservatives in Atlantic Canada...and the 8 to 11 is because three are very close

Its acceptable... I don't expect much from the welfare basket cases of Atlantic Canada. Getting them to wean themselves of the Liberals would have been a tall order. Chretien once actually ended welfare there and Atlantic voters punished the Liberals with loss of seats. Chastened, they restored the dole in time for the next election and they've been winning ever since.
