Canadian General Election, Live Thread (UPDATE: Conservatives Win!)
Elections Canada ^ | N/A

Posted on 01/23/2006 8:03:44 AM PST by GreenLanternCorps

If JimRob, etc. approve this is the Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, on January 23rd, 2005.

We have a while to go before the returns start coming in, but I thought the thread needed to get up and running.

+4 seats puts the Conservatives in democraticSPACE territory - 128 seats, if the rest of Canada follows.

The party was just competing in its first nationwide election two years ago. They've done quite a bit since then and while they don't have the machine the Liberals do, they're contesting every seat.

In '94 the GOP picked up traditionally Dem districts in states like Kentucky. Do the pick ups in NFLD presage good things countrywide?

It may be more than that... we'll see how much their vote totals in other regions adds up as the night wears on.

It's hard to extrapolate from Atlantic Canada. Getting the NDP vote in strongholds like Halifax and the Conservative vote in areas like Avalon and St. Johns would help us see whether the conservatives improved in Conservative ridings and Dippers in NDP ridings.

It sounds like Avalon went better than the polls expected.

From my read, the wild card will be suburban Toronto and Quebec. If the Tories pick up seats here couldn't they get a majority?

Don't think a majority is in the cards, based on these results. However, have to wait until at least 9:30 to be sure.

I predict that as soon as the polls open, CNN will announce that they have declared the liberals the winner in the hope that conservatives will decide not to bother to vote!

Quebec would have to go a LOT better than expected to get a majorty - 15+ seats. Or the Tories would need to swing 35+ seats in Ontario.

I don't think it's likely, but I'd love to see it.
