The governor's annual salary, which is the lowest in the nation, was last increased in 1987 when it jumped from $35,000 to $70,000.
If the bill passes, the governor's pay would jump to more than $220,000, or 10 percent higher than $200,850 salary of the chancellor of University of Maine System, according to the Legislature's fiscal office.

But Rep. Christopher Barstow, the House chairman of the legislative committee that will consider the bill, said he doesn't think he can support it.
Joining Maine at the low end of the pay scale are Arkansas ($75,296), Nebraska and Tennessee ($85,000), and North Dakota ($85,506), according to The Book of the States 2005.
The highest-paid governors come from New York ($179,000), Michigan ($177,000) and California ($175,000).

Baldacci and his buddies in Mecca
The photo shown above was taken at a reception for the Maine delegation, which Fidel Castro attended, and during which time a Proclamation was presented by the Governor which called for normalization of relations with Cuba. Seen in the photo are the President of Cuba, Fidel Castro, the Democratic Governor of Maine, John Elias Baldacci, Democrat House Speaker John Richardson, and Democrat Representative Edward Dugay.

Didn't you read the article? Baldacci is on record as being opposed to the bill, and would never see the raise even if it were passed and he were re-elected.

I don't know who's stink is going to rub off on whom here. Castro onto Baldacci or Baldacci onto Castro. It's anybody's guess.
The trouble with this is: Baldacci brought that stink back to Maine.

But Gov. John Baldacci does not support the bill, said his spokeswoman Crystal Canney. Baldacci would not be affected by the raise, even if re-elected.
Ok. Explain this: IF the bill goes through do you mean to tell me that Baldy will not accept the pay raise? Baldy talks a good game but I doubt very much if he would turn this raise down. Just looks good on paper with him saying this.
If he turns it down, IF the bill is passed, I will believe it when I see it. How's that?

He won't have a chance to accept it or not accept it. He won't get it. If the GOP is behind the raise then they must believe that the next governor is going to be a Republican.
