Al-Jazeera aired an audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden on Thursday, saying al-Qaida is making preparations for attacks in the United States but offering a truce to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan.
The voice on the tape said heightened security measures in the United States are not the reason there have been no attacks there since the Sept. 11, 2001, suicide hijackings.
Instead, the reason is "because there are operations that need preparations, and you will see them," he said.
"Based on what I have said, it is better not to fight the Muslims on their land," he said. "We do not mind offering you a truce that is fair and long-term. ... So we can build Iraq and Afghanistan ... there is no shame in this solution because it prevents wasting of billions of dollars ... to merchants of war."
The speaker did not give conditions for a truce in the excerpts aired by the Arab broadcaster.

Go ahead and laugh, but this is pure genius on the part of bin laden.
Right now the US is divided anyway. This gives fuel to the idiots on the left who want to "talk it out". It applies pressure to go to a bargining table. Lots of people in America who are middle of the road will start leaning left in an attempt to end the war.
Now, if the Bush administration does the right thing and ignores bin laden, and al quaida manages to pull off one attack of consequence in the US... then things get even messier. You'll have the media and the left going nuts.
This is bad, very bad.

Would be nice to see an impromptu white house statement by President Bush in the rose garden saying..... "we have heard Osama's offer of "truce". We are prepared to accept his unconditional surrender."

Love your screen name, brings back memories!
You are correct, in that this means that they (OBL) want a truce for re organizational reasons. That and I imagine AlQ is not that keen on Shiites getting nukes. Remember, the Shiites are just as likely to attack their fellow islamics as us.

This indicates weakness to me. Bin Laden would not be calling for a truce over there is they were dealing from a position of strength. Recent reports indicate that al qaeda is on the decline in Iraq. The locals are tired of attacks on them and innocent people.
To: redgolum
If you learn one thing from history, it is when an islamich jihadists offers a truce, he is either so hurt he can't attack or is planning to sucker punch you. It's recorded in one of their playbooks (I forget which - Koran, Hadith, etc.). Arafat used it to cause temporary ceasefires with Israel to regroup before starting the "so-called" intifada. He often bragged of using this approach that was attributed to Mohamhead who used it to regroup and strengthen his marauding band of cutthroats to re-attack and overcome their opponents. We need to keep pounding them and pounding them until they surrender or die.

Maybe somebody should come up with the brilliant idea of wiretapping those guys.
Maybe they'd win the presidency.
