Guitarist Jimmy Page of the band Led Zeppelin has been voted the top guitar soloist of all time for the song Stairway to heaven.
According to contactmusic.com, Page's performance topped the survey held by the website aboutguitars.com and beat out the likes of Eddie Van Halen for the track Eruption.
The third place was occupied by the dual guitar solo by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird.
The top 10 guitar solos are:
1. Stairway to heaven - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
2. Eruption - Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
3. Freebird - Allen Collins and Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
4. Comfortably numb - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
5. All along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
6. November rain - Slash (Guns N' Roses)
7. One - Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
8. Hotel California - Don Felder and Joe Walsh (The Eagles)
9. Crazy Train - Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)
10. Crossroads - Eric Clapton (Cream)
You are Mr. NRBQ!
I checked out Allofmp3.com hoping to find some Bob Seger System, Steve Hillage, or Crawler; but no luck. :-(
I've heard others say Relayer is their best.
Some of this stuff isn't so easy to find, esp. something like Tales, a double sided CD taking up shelf space, where they might if they're lucky sell one unit a month!
I'm having the same problem trying to find Tubular Bells.
And I still haven't read the whole thread, but has anybody mentioned Jorma yet???
That's true, generally speaking, the best of jaz guitarists have it over rock guitaists,on sheer virtuousity.
Even though he wouldn't be a virtuoso in anybody's book,I think that Pete "Windmills" Townshend has a very interesting and unique style.
I saw all three at the same time at the ARMS Concert (Ronnie Lane's benefit for multiple sclerosis) at the L.A. Forum in '83 (sitting 2nd row center). Beck and his band played the first set, Clapton the second, and Page (with The Firm) played the third. Then the highlight: All three came on stage together to play "Layla" (where they traded off amazing solos) and "With a Little Help from my Friends" (with Joe Cocker on vocals). Amazing show.

I like to listen to TFTO,but just for beauty and flow, and seamlessness,I have to prefer Close To The Edge. To be really just three songs, they're always over before I know it. I like prog rock, but I have to sit down and intend to listen to most of it-not Close To The Edge. It just goes and flows and gets my attention without any effort on my part.
i'm glad there are so many jeff beck fans on this thread.
it's funny, i always thought Jimmy Page's best guitar playing was on "dazed and confused".
Saw that show in NY very cool!
Best Rock and Roll Solo ever (ask any one mentioned here) is Scotty Moore on Elvis's Heatbreak Hotel, Killer.
I will, I haven't heard a version of that song I don't like yet,and I love classic bluegrass.
Try Ares,a peer-to-peer program,no spyware.
Anything by Phil Manzanera, but especially Prairie Rose, by Roxy Music.
Relayer is good, but I don't think it really exemplifies the classic "Yes" sound.
Jon Anderson of Yes made an album with Mike Oldfield.
it sounds good. i wish i had been there.
oh,well.
Don't forget Charlie Bird, Grant Green, and Kenny Burrell.
Les Paul wipes the floor with all these guys!
