The Judge Cashman Story (gives 60 days for child rapist in Vermont)
Bill O'Reilly.com ^ | 1/12/06 | Jesse Watters

Posted on 01/12/2006 5:27:11 PM PST by GailA

The story began with a tragic case of sexual abuse and seemingly ended with a guilty plea in a Vermont courtroom. Thirty-seven-year old Mark Hulett pled guilty to aggravated sexual assault on his close friend's daughter. The attacks occured from the time she was six years old until she turned ten. In front of Judge Edward Cashman, prosecutor Nicole Andreson asked that Hulett be sentenced to 8-20 years in prison, but on January 4th, Judge Cashman surprised everyone there by sentencing him to only 60 days in jail and ordered him to complete sex offender treatment after his release. At the hearing, Cashman explained, "...[punishment] accomplishes nothing of value... and it costs us a lot of money." Hulett will be out in 2 months.

The Factor called Cashman's office on January 5th, but the Judge declined to speak to us. Bill O'Reilly sent me to Burlington, VT on Sunday morning to try to talk to him in person. My crew and I parked outside of his house at 6:30am and waited for him to wake up. A police car pulled up an hour later and approached our van. "What are you guys doing?" the cop asked. I explained that we were from Fox News and we were waiting for an interview. It was obvious the officer already knew we were there to see the judge. "Some of the neighbors called and said a suspicious van was parked outside so I came to check it out. Are you local or national Fox News?" I said we were national and the officer smiled and drove away.

I worked in Vermont at a summer camp for 8 years in the 60's and 70's. It was a great place; the people were very conservative and family oriented. That's until the Gays started moving in. Now the idiots seem to out number the good people. God help them!

Yeah, I saw him screaming at them. O'Reilly was totally outraged, and rightly so, like you say.

Glad you posted this. It has been picked up by other networks, finally. All be it this is an issue for those in Vermont, it frankly should give folks around the country something to think about as they consider who sit's on their benches.

Is there no provision in the Vermont legal code for the prosecution to appeal against an unduly lenient sentence?

Are there no mandatory sentencing guidelines?

Absolutely unbelievable.

This is what comes up when you go to the State of Vermont's sex offender website. Although it appears that it probably meets the letter of the law, it comes nowhere near what the spirit of the law instructed the various states to do. Is it any wonder that a state so hostile to parents trying to protect their children from the worst of society could produce a Judge Edward Cashman?

This is exactly the type of hostility the framers of the Wetterling and Megan Laws were trying to stop. Notice how smug and Democrat sounding the preamble is.

"Access to sex offender information in Vermont is provided to the public as the result of the Jacob Wetterling Registration Act, which was passed by the United States Congress and Megan's Law, which requires states to release relevant information about registered offenders to protect the public. "

I don't always agree with Bill on things, he's to liberal on some issues for me. But on the issue of locking up child rapist/molesters I'm 100% behind his pushing each state for Jessica's law... 25-life for first offense.

These creeps ruin lives of the innocent, they deserve to be locked up for life.

"The story doesn't end there. On January 11th, the state of Vermont offered to provide sex offender treatment in prison to Mark Hulett so that Judge Cashman would have no excuse not to impose a lengthier sentence. And while Cashman may or may not reconsider, he now faces calls for his resignation from the largest newspaper in the state. The prosecutor is asking the judge to reconsider his sentence this Friday."

My bet is he folds on his 'principals' and changes the sentence; as he should. 60 days is a crime in and of itself.

Like usual, I like to dig a little deeper, but one thing puzzles me. Unless I'm not doing my searches correctly, I've spent almost and hour and only found one reference to what actually happened here.

Apparently, this guy was allowed to sleep with the girl in her room behind a locked door by the parents. They claimed that he was her "baby sitter".

Furthermore, this goes on for three or four years along with another guy raping her in their home and the parents don't know and the girl doesn't say anything to them?

Then the judge makes a statement that he "is doing this for the family ...".

You have to wonder about this whole thing; there has got to be more to it.

If anyone finds any articles concerning the details to this situation, not just "he raped her" I would like to know. The fact that I dug so long and found so little makes me suspicious.

FNC tidbit on the original rapist is that his IQ is low and he is about 12-14 years old mentally. THis is one of the things that is wrong about the news we get tidbits we have to piece together into the actual story.

If this is the case rehabing him probably won't work, he hasn't the IQ level to understand the treatment. They can only lock him up to protect others.

From my understanding, both parents are mentally challenged. They said that the perp has an IQ of 80.

The little girl was also raped by another friend of the perp. He is on bail right now but will be tried in another judges court later.

"The "judge" looks like a child molestor himself. "

It is usually repugnant to me when I have such feelings- but I totally agree, and I don't feel a damn bit guilty about feeling this way- This judge is a pervert, and a scumbag, and probably a child sexual predator himself. He should be hung, not impeached.

O'Reilley said on 0116 (mon) that the parents were mentally challenged.

Vermont USED to be a conservative state, That was before the Liberal Tide Rolled up the CT and Hudsons Rivers and Washed up our shores. * Yeah, Howey Dean was one of them, Originally a MassHole. This Judge is just the TIP of the HUGE ICE BERG of Corruption and Abuses that Howey, and before him, " Paddlin' Maddelin" have left as a Legacy that the Liberal Press won't print, and them that are making out from their Liberalistic influences won't Rat about. It is True that the Vermont Criminal Justice System takes More Creedance from the Orvis Company of Manchester, VT (The Fly Fishing Mecca Store) That Being' Catch And Release." It is also True that all this Liberalistic Stuff has controdictions within the Criminal Justice System.. IE. Dont Drive Drunk, BUT Smoke all the Pot you want, Do all the Coke you can, And Shoot up with as Much Heroin as you want Because the Law Enforcement Cant Test you for that. And Oh Yeah, Commit Burglary, Larceny, And Now Child Sexual Misconduct and Hell YEAH you get Practically a Spank on the Butt. BUT Man, You Even have a HINT that you had a fight in your Home... OH MY GOD.. Lock your a** up!! Take away your Firearms and BANISH you from the House you Pay the Taxes on. Meanwhile as you wait two years for a Trial, The States Attorney's Victims Advocate, Copies your Records and Distributes them to people in the community as she deems fit without Regard for Ethics laws or procedure for dealing with public records. OH YEAH the State of Vermont has MANY MANY issues. Judge Cashman, He's just a Symptom of the True Nature of the REAL Issues. The Liberal Nature boils down to, Lets Just All Get Along, Unless you disagree with me, in that case I will put my resentment for you into action behind your back, Try to Starve you Out, Kill All Opportunity for economic growth, And line the politicians and goverment officals pockets with My Special Interest Money so They Vote what I want in Spite of majority oppossition. Yes, Vermont is Indeed a Great Example of Sensationalism and Shock Governing. Howey Dean Perfected that.
