Day 3: Questioning Continues
This morning, Round 1 concludes with Senators on the Judiciary Cmte. who did not question nominee Alito yesterday. During Round 2, questioning is limited to 20 minutes for each of the eight- een senators. Chairman Arlen Specter (R-PA) leads off, followed by the others, alternating by party in order of seniority.

Frankly, I prefer it remain there.
The federal government has taken too much upon itself as it is.
Abortion, if overturned, will also be a state's rights issue.
"W-O-W! Was he really? If so, that would explain a lot."
http://www.answers.com/Robert%20C.%20Byrd
He, like many southerners of the time, participated in the KKK for a period of time during World War II, holding the titles "Kleagle", which indicated a Klan recruiter, and "Exalted Cyclops." Byrd did not serve in the military during the war, working instead as a welder in a Baltimore shipyard, assembling warships.
verrrrrrry interesting. LOL
(rubbing hands together in glee!)
Cronyn/Coburn 2008
Interesting line of questioning by Coburn... the whole idea of checks and balances hangs on this idea (as if the democraps don't know).
Thanks. And I wonder if she's the woman in the black dress with the shiny gold necklace, sitting next to his son Phillip. I think they are not showing the faces on purpose...
GHWB?
I was just reading the transcript of the questioning by Senator Graham. I am blown out of the water by Alito's exceptional memory and ability to cite cases. He is an encyclopedia of legal knowledge and to not have this individual on the SCOTUS would be a crime.
I would be willing even to settle for that even though I disagree with it vehemently and consider it murder. Do you think the pro choicers would be willing to compromise like that? I doubt it. In which case, who are the extremists?
"Yeah. What happened in 1989?"
Not sure
http://www.answers.com/Dick%20Durbin
Durbin, a lawyer originally from East St. Louis, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982 and served there from 1983 to 1997.
Durbin is probably cleaning out his drawers right now. He never saw the 18 wheeler of truth coming up behind him at lightning speed! Here he was, putzing down the liberal highway of hypocricy, happy happy. And WHAM!! Hit from behind by his past. I'm sure he's still shaken!
Durbin became pro-choice in 1989 ???
hmmmmm
About the same time Al Gore switched. If you wanted to go anywhere in the D party you had to.
Just one more drop in the bucket for the democrats...
I like the question: why do you want this job?
If it were me, because I'm a smart ass, I'd reply: I'm a people person, I like people.
I think that should be 1987.
http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/finding
finding n. the determination of a factual question vital (contributing) to a decision in a case by the trier of fact (jury or judge sitting without a jury) after a trial of a lawsuit, often referred to as findings of fact. A finding of fact is distinguished from a conclusion of law which is determined by the judge as the sole legal expert. Findings of fact and conclusions of law need not be made if waived or not requested by the trial attorneys, leaving just the bare judgment in the case.
conclusion of law n. a judge's final decision on a question of law which has been raised in a trial or a court hearing, particularly those issues which are vital to reaching a judgment. These may be presented orally by the judge in open court, but are often contained in a written judgment in support of his/her judgment such as an award of damages or denial of a petition. In most cases either party is entitled to written conclusions of law if requested.
judgment n. the final decision by a court in a lawsuit, criminal prosecution, or appeal from a lower court's judgment, except for an "interlocutory judgment" which is tentative until a final judgment is made. The word "decree" is sometimes used as synonymous with judgment.
decree n. in general, synonymous with judgment. However, in some areas of the law, the term decree is either more common or preferred as in probates of estates, domestic relations (divorce), admiralty law, and in equity (court rulings ordering or prohibiting certain acts). Thus, there may be references to a final or interlocutory decree of divorce, final decree of distribution of a dead person's estate, etc.
That certainly was one of the great moments in the history of these hearings! Senator Coburn gets bonus points for that!
I have become a big fan of Sen. Cornyn and would love to see him run for the presidency.
I think he finally caved to the pressure to more openly oppose the Repubs? He saw GHWB take center stage and he was nominally pro life or even pro choice, so he took his cue...?
Where in DuPage County are you? I have some bad news to deliver to you. My moonbat sister and her husband live in Addison, and if you are in the same congressional district, they are cancelling your votes :(
