An extraordinary burst of global warming that occurred around 55 million years ago dramatically reversed Earth's pattern of ocean currents, a finding that strengthens modern-day concern about climate change, a study says.
The big event, the Palaeocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), saw the planet's surface temperature rise by between five and eight degrees C (nine and 16.2 F) in a very short time, unleashing climate shifts that endured tens of thousands of years. ...

More grounds for impeachment! Someone better call the NY Times and tell them to get the front page ready for this! Might as well get ready for DU to start trumpeting this cause ... and CBS, and CNN and MSNBC ....
Noone knows what the temperature and currents were 55 million years ago. Some do pretend to know, however.
Exactly, especially given the historical fact of how wrong or incomplete so much of "established scientific thought" has been found to be.
Don't give them any ideas. :-)
LOL... VERY clever
That is the problem with history it is can not be repeated in an experiment. All history is dependent on an accurate interpretation of the leavings of time. What is certain about history, especially when millions of years is involved, is that what we know will always be a small fraction of the reality of what happened.

I can't help but wonder how many hundreds of unfounded assumptions the researchers plugged into their calculations to come up with this astounding finding. I mean, they don't even know what the average temperature was a thousand years ago!
They seem to be doing a pretty straight up presentation, none of that weird "mankind is destroying the planet" stuff..

More global warming here and now will lead to the melting of the ice in Greenland and on Antactica. The oceans will raise by how much? Around 325ft.? Something like that? We NEED an Ice Age to keep Austin, TX on the map and Waco from being beachfront again.
