Forty-five minutes into Wednesday's tour three miles off Haleiwa, four people in a shark cage started screaming with excitement.

The crew looked to see what all the commotion was about and saw a large animal approaching.

"It was so incredibly big, we thought it was a baby humpback whale," said Jimmy Hall, owner of Hawaii Shark Encounters.

Hall and his crew soon realized that the animal was not a whale, but a great white shark, 18 to 20 feet long. They too got excited, scrambled for their video and still cameras, entered the cage with the tourists and started snapping and recording.

After about 10 minutes of recording video and noticing that the large animal was not behaving aggressively, Hall realized this was his chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.

He exited the cage to swim with a great white shark.

I think those are mating scars. She is very deep in the belly and in very warm water to boot, I would not be suprised if she were getting ready to pup.

Sure, they are. Remember the idiot who "wanted to commune with the grizzlies" until one ate him?

Nah. That guy has cajones the size of a boxcar, but he's still a moron. Do you think the shark couldn't see the diver because he was wearing camouflage? /sarc

Look at the first pic. Her pectoral fins are STRAIGHT down. That's not a relaxed posture. She is not comfy in that pic at all. Pregnant sharks need even more food to support the young in utero - if they arent fed well from mommy they eat each other.

I had a charter (35 people) offshore on a two-day fishing trip on an 85-footer last summer. We had a couple sharks nosing around astern of the boat as we were moving to another spot.

A couple of our "fishermen" threw a few slabs of skipjack (used for cut-bait) to the sharks. The sharks checked them out and ignored them. Some other idiot threw a beer can overboard and one of the sharks immediately ate it.

These fish respond to electrical stimuli as well as scent and vibrations in the water. They can literally "feel" a food fish using his swimming muscles.

This means that there are a LOT of things that can happen in the water that can make them think you are the entree for their next meal.

Not all of these sharks have read up on exactly how they are supposed to act (they don't get the "Discovery Channel") so don't be surprised when they do something you didn't expect.

If you want to play with a shark, just think about which of the two is more likely to end up in an ambulance.

You are a wise man and I agree with you completely. This fellow was taking his chances and he got lucky. He could have been dinner.

You play with sharks with a 45/70 and Garrett ammo... What that diver is doing is insane.
