CA: Abuse of power - Use of state funds for Reiner cause is wrong (Meathead Alert!)
San Diego Union - Tribune ^ | 12/31/05 | Editorial

In 1998, when Rob Reiner led the fight for an initiative that would add a 50-cent-per-pack tax on cigarettes to pay for child development programs, a common media theme was that the actor-director might be naive, but, boy, wasn't his idealism refreshing?

Imagine, a wealthy Hollywood type putting up his own time and money because he was so worried about nurturing children.

But five years after the passage of the California Children and Families First Initiative, Reiner and his allies have abandoned any claim to the moral high ground. Their role in the misuse of taxpayer dollars for what is little more than promotion of Reiner's latest crusade – a 2006 initiative to provide free preschool to all the state's 4-year-olds – is far more sleazy than noble.

According to a Sacramento Bee report, the First 5 California Commission – the agency created under Reiner's previous initiative to distribute tobacco-tax proceeds – is in the middle of an $18 million media campaign that promotes preschool as the greatest thing since sliced bread. One TV ad says preschoolers are more likely to be college graduates. Another says preschool helps the economy and reduces crime.

Only an utter naif would believe the commission's contention that it is just a coincidence that Reiner chairs both the First 5 commission and the Preschool for All initiative committee. While Reiner recused himself from the decision to fund the media campaign, it is obvious that his commission allies are using taxpayer funds to lay the groundwork for his 2006 campaign. This may not be criminal, but it is an abuse of power.

The next time you read a gushy article about Reiner, the rich show-biz mogul who so cares about kids, feel free to groan. He may care about kids, but he doesn't give a rip about ethics.

Since 13 years of public education under liberal contol has proven to be an utter failure, the liberals' solution is predictible, more money and another year and THAT will fix the problem.

The bill was supposed to use the money for "Education" to reduce smoking. It was not used for that, and there was never any guidelines for accountability. so the money was wasted and squandered.

Meathead is a Leftist pinko Idiot. another Hollywood
Comsimp...ripping us off for leftist agendas.

The only thing that surprises me about this is that anyone should be surprised. OF COURSE the government is going to spend the money they took from the taxpayers in order to expand their control over citizens and their claim in more money. That's what government DOES.

Wasn`t there a study that suggested that preschool wasn`t the real determiner of academic success, instead parental involvement was by far much more important? I also remember a statement by some liberal talking heads that in order to instill their socialist engineering schemes they had to "get hold of the kids earlier".

This crap is just another in the leftist`s long line of attempts to save their pathetic socialist dogma in spite of the obvious proof that it simply can not ever work no matter what permutations it`s acolytes try.

Reiners a communist... His latest film "Rumor has it" is rife with praise for Che Guevera and other communists. It is so blatant... I am actually shocked that no one else has noticed it...
