President Bush's Republican Party's love affair with Hispanic voters may soon come to an end: Judging from the xenophobic measures proposed by conservative Republicans in Congress last week, many Latino voters will think twice before casting a vote for Republicans in the 2006 congressional elections.

This guy has no interest whatsover in GOP and hispanic relations. He seems to be a Chavez of Venezuela cheerleader.

The Dems can try woeing them, and they will lose most of their American voters. I think the US is saying "adios" to the illegal immigrants.

Only guys light in the loafers would be Xena-phobic, but I guess that's something different.

All 3 of your points are exactly right.

So then... Why has the 'Pub party resisted doing anything about our borders so far?

So, should we drop the war on terrorism and let Al Quaeda roam free in the U.S. bombing as they please simply to appease the Muslims and keep the Muslim vote?

In the 1800's, we should have never opposed slavery as we desired the votes of the southern states. Right?

For what does it profit a political party to gain more votes but lose its soul?

"Every time someone does something to curtail it, they go bananas."

I guess the question would be "who's "they"?".

It doesn't take too many illegals (or libs)to stage a demonstration for the cameras.

Looks like the Rats are continuing with their racist politics. They are linking citizens and legal aliens from Hispanic ethnic backgrounds with illegal aliens and criminals with similar backgrounds.

The only solution to the reduce illegal immigration will be launching a European Union-styled "Community of the Americas" in which Washington would offer aid to Latin American countries in exchange for commitments of economic discipline and free-market policies.

A European Union-styled "Community of the Americas" I agree would solve poverty in Latin America since with free movement of people there won't be any left down there once they all march northward into the US.

Then I suppose to solve that little problem this author will urge a "Community of the World" to merge us with the remaining wealthy nations so they too can be plundered. What a brilliant plan.

That's the question that many lifetime 'Pubs are asking and getting no answer. The Bush open borders/pandering policy for the last five years has scared many of us away in disgust.

I wonder about that myself. The only thing I can think of, and it will anger alot of people, is that the republican Party is all too willing to accomodate Corporate America. I just cannot think of another reason why the GOP would allow this to continue.

Just what percentage of "legal" Mexican immigrants favor what they determine "open borders" to be is anyone's guess. I am willing to bet it breaks down something like this. If it affects them or their extended family, they are in favor of open borders and lax immigration policy.

this jerk thinks very little of his own people. He thinks Hispanics are in favor of illegal immigration. This was on the table last year and it failed to keep Hispanics from sneaking out of the plantations back door. Too bad they didn't wake up their fellow plantation slaves on the way out.

I've considered that too. Depressing. No?

Maybe my old man was right after all. He was a lifelong Dem and always told me "the Republicans are just for the rich".

I would suggest that pandering to the Chamber of Commerce provides a far better explanation of the Republican Party's failure to address illegal immigration then pandering for Hispanic votes. The hispandering is just a convenient smokescreen.

We are repeatedly told that the Hispanic vote is crucial to the success of the party. But in truth, that is pretty hard to believe. The only state where the Hispanic vote made a significant difference in either the 2000 or the 2004 elections was Florida. In every other state with a significant Hispanic voting base the outcome was determined without the Hispanics. In California, the Democrats were going to win with or without the Hispanic vote. In Texas the same was true for Republicans. The same holds true for Arizona, Nevada, Massachusetts, NY, Illinois, North and South Carolina and every other state where Hispanics have significant populations.

And in Florida, the voting Hispanics are Cubans and they have never much liked Mexicans, resent their invasion and don't care at all about amnesties and guest workers because they benefit from the dry feet policy.

So is the poem on the Statue of Liberty those who want open borders for the cheap labor trot out all the time. McCain was that playing that game recently. I guess he thought it would bring tears to our eyes and then we'd accept his scamnesty the Chamber of Commerce wants so bad.

We should box that up and send it back to our "friends" the French. They need some more Muslims.

I would agree it's worn out any practicality it might have once had.

I just cannot think of another reason why the GOP would allow this to continue.

One big blaring flashing neon light reason is rather simple....., we believe that the advantages and strengths of freedom will NOT be "overwhelmed" by the "flood" of immigrants, but we believe that the blessings of freedom, free enterprise, and free markets will actually be enhanced by the arrival of new people, and that those benefits will flow back to the home countries from whence they came.

This is the heart and soul of free market capitalism. We see opportunities, potential millionaires, and sources of blessing bot to us and to themselves when you guys see threats, dire predictions and people who will destroy us. It really is that simple.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he studied law for four years at the University of Buenos Aires' Law School, and moved to the United States in 1976 with a fellowship from the World Press Institute. Afer a year at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, he obtained a Master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University in New York in 1978.

Born in Argentina and he's supposed to be objective?
