They (our so-called government) says that Echelon has been discontinued.
Does ANYBODY believe them?

Thanks for the link. Do have any info on the misplaced 900 FBI files? I was hoping to get the NYT to finally launch and expose on that one. The way congress has been acting I would submit they are still out there being used.

Of course it's been "discontinued"........
That's Washington-DC-speak for "The program has been renamed but we're not telling anybody about that."
To: msnimje
But that's different. You see that was Willard. See the difference?

Yes, I remember when people on the internet used to use all the forbidden words that Echelon was tuned to intercept, such as clinton, Mena Airport, boys on the railroad tracks, Vincent Foster, Fort Marcy Park, Waco, Ron Brown, Monica, and the like, just to give them more to do.

Let's also not forget the
satellite used to monitor events at Elohim City prior to the OKC bombing (during the Clinton Admin) and
COINTELPRO.
Truth is...the Government has been spying on citizens for decades. Only when it involves Bush are they outraged.

Can anyone point out the one difference between Echelon and Santa's Nauty/Nice program version 4.2?

There must be no "substantial likelihood" that the intercepted communications include those to which a U.S. person is a party.
Does "US person" mean US citizen or anyone, citizen or not, in the US at the time of the surveillance? This sentence of the law confuses me, because it seems to contradict the belief that this eavesdropping is legal under this law. Not that I'm losing any sleep of this whole "scandal" but I want to make sure I understand it correctly. Well, let me rephrase - I'll lose more sleep over it being leaked than the fact that the NSA is listening to some bad people.

Thank you for reminding me about those nasty Clinton days.
Thank God they are dust in the wind.

Irrespective of whether the program continues (I can almost guarantee it does), the NYTimes, et al, has rendered it all but useless except to the stupidest of terrorists. This was a huge weapon of intelligence that has had its teeth yanked out.

Good afternoon.
PING for a trip down FR Memory Lane.
Memory lane...I remember when i42 and his administration were investigating FReepers, and sending the FBI, USSS, local sheriff, etc. to FReeper's homes.
And I also remember a concerted effort by FReepers back then to overload Echelon and Carnivore's servers.
8^)
In the fwiw department, I can't think of ONE FReeper who's been rousted since W. has been in office.
