The political leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas has said it will not renew its informal ceasefire with Israel that expires at the end of year.
Khaled Meshaal told a rally in the Syrian capital Damascus his group was preparing for a new round of conflict.
The truce begun in February was based on Israel ending its attacks on Palestinians and releasing prisoners.
Hamas had already said it would pull out of the truce when Israel killed a military leader in November.
Addressing the crowd at the Yarmouk refugee camp near Damascus, Mr Meshaal said there was no room for a truce.
"I say to our brothers in the [Palestinian] Authority that we are witnessing political stagnation," he said.
"I say it loudly, we will not enter a new truce and our people are preparing for a new round of conflict."
Mr Meshaal was named the organisation's most senior figure after the assassination of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in March 2004.
Correspondents say Hamas' politburo, which Mr Meshaal heads, is more hardline and ideological than the group's leadership in Gaza.
What has the Iran president promised them?
Yes. A truly target rich environment.
Technically, it's a Hudna!
"What is being touted as a 'cease-fire' is something called a 'hudna.' A hudna [also known as a hudibiyya or khudaibiya] is a tactical cease-fire that allows the Arabs to rebuild their terrorist infrastructure in order to be more effective when the "cease-fire" is called off." -- "Cease-fire?" by Shira A. Drissman
An EXCELLENT point!
An untested nuke design that needs a test site?
It's a hudna meaning a pause in the Jihad. A pause to rearm and regroup. When the time is right the killing and Jihad resume. On age old Muslim tactic. Sometimes they do it is sneaky ways with a peace treaty but sometimes the Muhammadans acknowledge it's just a pause
Muhammad himself violated a peace treaty to resume Jihad and advocated no treaty longer than ten years
They had a truce?
In other news, the democratic party has said its agreement to respect the president while we are at war will end at the end of the year too.
Yes. Hear it from the original. try this link
First of all, Gaza is the armpit of the world. That's what the Egyptians said when Begin tried to give it back during Camp David in 1979.
Second, Under 242, Gaza and most of the West Bank is going to have to be given for a Palestinian state. Even though a Palestinian state is not mentioned in 242, those who negotiated it believed that would be the end result...but it was not to be anything until all belligerency stopped. That has not happened.
Third, Hamas can end its "truce" because Hamas has never been held responsible or culpable for any Jewish life they have taken...
Fourth, Sharon pulled out of Gaza for the same reason he is going to eventually pull out of the West Bank (providing he wins reelection)... There is no peace partner. Abu Mazen either can't or won't control Hamas... So, Sharon is going to unilaterally fix Israel borders along the Green Line incorporating 90% of the settlements, build his wall, and let the Palestinians stew in their juices.
The Palestinians, unable to do much, will have to become the incorrigable wards of the world...
The terror will continue, and the world will allow it because they have never come to the defense of the Jews (with a few exceptions)
Daniel Pipes has on his website an article that states the President did not want Sharon to pull out Gaza because Sharon received nothing in return... but the Israelis, tired of the death and terror, have decided to move ahead on their own. The last time they did this was Oslo. It was a self-inflicted wound. I do not believe Sharon is making that same kind of mistake because Sharon will defend Jewish lives.
And we'll notice the difference how?
I hope Sharon has the balls to nuke the region...maybe then will Arabs truly meditate on their erred ways
Actually in Oslo they thought they were getting something in return, here there was no such pretense. Plus they did not get any separation. In fact they are now going to allow transit between the Gaza and West Bank something they did not even allow pre 67 War. They are fools and are going to pay dearly for their foolishness.
Furthermore, they decided to bring back a marginalized Arafat because of Hamas. They hoped the PLO would be able to control Hamas. Instead the PLO and Hamas joined forces.
What they hoped to get was peace on their own terms since they were coerced into going to Madrid, and they believed that a peace was going to be forced upon them. A peace that they could not live with. There is a big difference in that.
Well, if the West Bank and Gaza are going to a Palestinian state, they are going to have to be connected somehow.
I think fools is a little harsh. The Jews face a closed world. They also have. They are never allowed to win, and must always be diplomatically forced to stop before victory is theirs. This is because when it comes down to it...the world has decided which is more important...Arabs and their oil. It's a simple as that.
Sharon is once more trying to make peace on Israeli terms before a peace forced upon him. This is hardly foolish... and the Israelis are hardly fools.
Something about a "Road to Peace? (insert laugh track here)
Fine. I hope that Israel dispatches a few more Hamas leaders come January.
There never was a truce.
Remember that wheelchair-bound Hamas 'spiritual leader', Sheik Yassin something or other...last time we saw him his head was rolling down the street after an Israeli missile attack. Same thing with his successor a month later. Keep culling the herd.
Best thing you can do to a terrorist. Kill every last one of them...
