‘Real Men Moisturize’
Jewish World Review ^ | June 3, 2005 | Mona Charen

Posted on 11/29/2005 2:57:30 PM PST by jjm2111

"Real Men Moisturize." So begins an article on "Sharp Dressed Men" that appeared in a State Department funded magazine aimed at youth in the Arab world. The magazine, called "Hi" is published in Arabic and English....

The article continues: "In fact, some of them, like Michael Gustman, a 25-year-old public relations account executive from Boca Raton, Fla., even have separate moisturizers for the face and body. Facial pores can clog with too heavy a salve, it seems. Gustman exfoliates. He gets pedicures. He gets facials. He accessorizes. ... In a word, he's a metrosexual."

[snip]

...Is this what the U.S. State Department thinks America is really like? How many men, outside a tiny subset in major cities, are the primping, feminized "metrosexuals" the article lauds? ... You cannot enhance understanding between one people and another by presenting a false version of one side.

...Does the State Department believe that Arab males — some of whom do not permit their wives and daughters to go out in public without a male family member as escort, others of whom think nothing of killing a daughter who dishonors the family by fraternizing with a boy — are going to be impressed with a vision of America in which males are feminized "exfoliated," smooth-skinned eunuchs?

The State Department is apparently so delighted with the Hi Magazine approach that they are translating it for use around the world.

[snip]

In this "everybody's world," particularly the parts at which Hi Magazine is pitched, there are troubles that seem a bit remote from hair and nail care. In Iraq, half the population, according to one poll, believes that a man has a right to beat his wife if she disobeys him (and the Koran gives this sanction).

[snip]

And the State Department magazine prattles about facials.

-In a word, he's a metrosexual.-

In my words, he's a woman.

A 'man' who exfoliates and can tell a brand of shoe by looking at it would be as alien to them as a Martian to us. They would think he was gay and try to stone him.

Personally, I would say they would have about a 100% chance of being right in that thinking

Cheers,

Ok. Either I take that back or I redefine moisturize. Putting something on your chapped face or hands or lips doesn't seem like my idea of "moisturize". All the men in my family including cops and construction workers did that. Cornhuskers lotion was one product.

When I think of "moisturize" I think of the sitcom wife with white cream all over her face getting ready for bed!

You exfoliate each time you shave.

I've been "exfoliating" most of the afternoon. Ran out of gas for the saw, so now I'll burn some branches and "moisturize" with a few beers after dinner.

I don't even know what exfoliating is. Nor do I care.

I do, however, have extremely dry skin and in dry climates (like where I live), if I don't slap some lotion on my face from time to time, I look like I've been lost in the desert for a month... my face gets all flaky.

So am I metro?

[shudder]

You exfoliate each time you shave.

Yes.... but not for the sole purpose of "exfoliating". It's a "result" of shaving. :)

Nice to see that the State Dept is promoting (probably intentionally) an image of the American male as some pedicured flamer. The State Dept needs to be purged.

But you're talking "practical".....not a ritual process. Worry only....if you spend 45 minutes getting ready for bed because you have to "do the face". *chuckle*

I don't believe I have ever met a man who "moisturizes" and "exfoliates". :)

I don't know what "exfoliate" means. It is not even a word recognised by the Australian Oxford Dictionary

Gustman exfoliates. He gets pedicures. He gets facials. He accessorizes. ... In a word, he's a metrohomosexual.

Fixed.

Any government foray into popular culture is bound to be open to criticism.
This might be a clumsy attempt at propaganda, but maybe not.
They may have a good idea on their hands if they seek to build bridges to young city people, who may in fact be tired of the old mullahs and their strict rules and outdated outlooks. That seems to be the only decent long term outlook for Iran, for instance. This stuff seems silly, but there are precious few options in building dialog in this region and experimentation is probably a good thing in the long run.

Exfoliate = The purposeful sloughing of dead skin cells ...with a product not of your making or recognizable by the normal male species. (from the dictionary of Lainey)

Yeah, you know how wrinkled skin gets at 25... What a poof.

Heck, I don't even know too many women who moisturize.

So you hang out with a bunch of ugly scratchy women? I'm a woman. If the women you know are half way smooth then they are moiturizing. Otherwise they would look like your buddies at the bar. And we are leading full lives with happy husbands.

Moisturizing is a good idea for anyone -- male or female -- whose skin is too dry. Soap and hot water are unnatural and tend to dry out skin, so moisturizer is a good option for those of us who don't want to give up soap and hot water. Not sure that soap and hot water are very popular among the target audience of that State Department rag, though, so they probably don't get the need for any moisturizer, much less obsessing over different types for different parts of the body.
