San Francisco to Army: Drop Dead
Weekly Standard ^ | 11/28/2005, Volume 011, Issue 11 | Stanley Kurtz

HAS SAN FRANCISCO SECEDED FROM the United States? The passage on Election Day of Measure I, dubbed "College, Not Combat," would seem almost to amount to that. By a margin of 60 percent to 40 percent, San Francisco's voters told military recruiters to stay out of the city's high schools. Although Measure I is nonbinding, it is a repudiation of a basic obligation of citizenship. Whatever one's views on the Iraq war and the president's policies, we are all under the protection of the U.S. military. Fighting for our foreign policy goals in the public arena is one thing. Making it impossible for our military to recruit is another.

Measure I may be "merely" symbolic, but the statement it makes is in no way trivial. In the simplified language of the ballot, voters were told, "If you vote 'yes,' you want it to be City policy to oppose military recruiters' access to public schools and to consider funding scholarships for education and training that could provide an alternative to military service." And they replied, overwhelmingly, yes, that is what we want.

San Francisco's symbolic rejection of the military deserves to be met with an equally powerful symbolic response. Congress ought to consider a resolution of censure. Clear statements of disapproval by national officials from the area--Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi? Sen. Barbara Boxer? Sen. Dianne Feinstein?--would also be in order.

Unfortunately, matters are breaking in the opposite direction. Instead of facing up to San Francisco's rejection of its elemental duty to this country, Pelosi tried to turn the debate over Measure I into a debate over Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly, who called for a cut-off of federal funds to the city, and hinted at the need for a travel boycott. "I was not behind [Measure I] 100 percent," said Pelosi.

We need a federal law to stop this garbage.

We can't. This is a state and local matter. Bill realized the only thing the feds can do, which is cut off money.

Well just like I never met an Atheist in combat,
we didn't have any antiwar protesters in my unit in Nam either. LOL

US Taxpayers to San Franisco, Drop Dead.

No Federal Money to any community that refuses US Military recruters access to their schools. Will be brining this matter to the attention of a number of Congress critters at their town halls this month.

Yep which we should do immediately. Don't want the obligations of Citizenship SF? Fine, you don't get the benefits either then.

I wouldn't damn the entire state of CA over a few bad apples...remember CA has more conservatives and Republicans than any other state in the Union...and I won't even get into the tens of thousands of Marines, Soldiers, Airmen & Sailors stationed in CA.

Kelly

It's really sad, because at one time San Francisco was a great Navy town, before the fruitcakes took over.

Well it would be impossible for the NG to refuse to go to their rescue; but there just might be a few thousand volunteer firefighters from around CA and other states who just might stay home.

"...it is a repudiation of a basic obligation of citizenship."

Rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. But liberals always forget about the responsilities part.

Since the city and county of San Francisco prefer not to allow their citizens to join in protecting the United States, I suggest that we curtail any perks that they enjoy from the largess of the US.
Perhaps then, they may understand.
United We Stand Divided we Fall.

Ditto jpl:
In early 1967 before shipping out to Nam I spent a week at Treasure Island. San Francisco could not have been a closer friend to the military establishment then.

I boycotted San Francisco by leaving a very good job there last summer and I am now working in Germany. I had no choice but to leave because I would otherwise have gotten into a fight with a male traitor and hurt someone. In the last month alone (July 2004), three irksome and aggressive anti-war males got in my face. 1) At a nice beach gathering of mostly Republicans, a socalled "libertarian" started going off about how he was going to get his rifle and "defend" himself against the rest of us if we ever had to come after "traitors"...2) the African-American manager of the Walnut Creek movie theater showing F9-11 started using abusive language when I politely asked him if I could hand out flyers at the first showing of Michael Moore's film...and 3) a college professor at a Davis Starbucks arrogantly tried to impress his 20 year old girlfriend with traitor talk and when I politely told him that there were people like him criticizing the American invasion and democratization of Europe in 1944 he started to freak out. But about having San Franciscans in a foxhole: Colby Buzzell was from San Francisco before joining up to go to Iraq. He has written an excellent book called "My War" and had an excellent blog during his time in service. His email is Mywarcbftw@gmail.com

The hard part is trying to find a real way of getting rid of parasites cutting of federal money is a start but that to really rid our nation of all these low life leeches it is going to take some creative legislation I don't think a boycott would work who in their right mind would go there anyway.

Normal Americans who grew up in the SF Metro to scumbag Communist hippies who have taken over our home: Today, you are protected by the combination of a judiciary on the fringes of society, an American public who have forgotten how to investigate and prosecute treason, and by a generally good social, political and economic set of conditions. If ever these things falter, rough justice will not be kind to you. And you can take that to the bank.

No surprise, most of the normal families moved out to the burbs years ago. Out of a population of nearly 800,000 in the City proper, only about 120000 are children. It's a no brainer what that stat means.
