AgapePress) - An official with a pro-family group reports that a boycott campaign aimed at Target Stores nationwide has succeeded in attracting hundreds of thousands of consumers who say they intend to shop elsewhere during what is traditionally the busiest shopping weekend of the year.

On Friday (Nov. 18) the American Family Association (AFA) launched on online boycott campaign against Target, citing the retailer's decision to ban Salvation Army kettles from their store entrances as well as the use of "Merry Christmas" in their in-store promotions and retail advertising. By the following Monday, almost 300,000 individuals had "signed" an online petition indicating they planned to express their disapproval of that decision by avoiding Target Stores during the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. At press time, that number had jumped to more than 340,000

That would be the same as the the Salvation Army ringer that said "God Bless You" when I gave him my contribution. He was genuinely thankful and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside too!

Meanwhile, Target officials are planning to bring out "Mr. Patrick" hats and party items for the March 17 holiday.

To me, this is not about SUPPORTING a policy. It's about continuing to shop at a place I've been shopping at for over 10 years.

It's certainly NOT about supporting liberalism or about promoting any other belief system than my own.

I know just as well as the next person on this site what this country was founded on and it's just as important to me. But I'm not going to be a person who doesn't allow for any tolerance.

And if Target wants to say...."ok, we are going to open up our terms and allow for the fact that there are other religions here and whatever" then I am NOT going to be someone who says they shouldn't do that.

It's up to them. It doesn't bother me. Because I know what Christmas is to ME. To my religion. To my family.

Again, I'm not saying you shouldn't boycott. I understand where you're coming from. I just have a lot of friends of other religions and I guess I can see Target's point too.

So I keep my beliefs close to me and my family on this issue and keep the retail side of Christmas on the retail side.

We keep the Christ side in our hearts.

The true meaning of Christmas is not about Commercialism.

Correct.

I say shop where you want to shop.

I say don't participate in the secular shopping orgy.

You are perfectly within your right to shop at or boycott Target or any other retailer. Don't feel that shopping during the post-Thanksgiving period makes you any more of a patriot doing his job to keep the American economy alive and people employed.

If the retailers had a genuine business plan, they wouldn't pull out all stops in the fourth quarter to try to get a lot of high pressure, high volume, low margin sales.

Well given that the Christmas tree was stolen from Norse practices and was renamed when adopted by Christians I guess that day came several HUNDRED years ago.

So the tree had to be renamed "holiday tree" because the Norse used the tree several hundred years ago and now this group may now be offended?

There's no problem with calling the Christmas trees. I started off merely pointing out that on both the Lowes and Target websites the category is "Christmas Tree" in direct contradiction to the original article, now some of the individual ITEMS in the section are "Holiday Trees" but that should be hung on the neck of the manufacturer not on the store. Then I had to give a little history lesson, apparently many people labor under the illusion that there were evergreens in Israel 2000 years ago. A lot of the symbolism of Christianity is borrowed and tweaked, I think that's just a natural side effect of a religion where the primary figure was born and raised in a different religion then killed by members of a third; add to that the fact that it's been spread in the last few centuries primarily by English (a language built entirely of borrowed words) speaking people and a lot of the stuff on the fringe of the religion (like trees) are going to not have any real scriptural tie to the religion.

No. The tree didn't have to be renamed and in 99% of the entries on both websites is not renamed. As for why certain manufacturer renamed them who cares, they made the product they made the box they made the choice. Don't like it don't buy it, but don't blame the store for decisions by one or two of their suppliers, and do understand that the tree has a history of use for holidays in the season that predate the birth of Christ.

I was almost sure that they had a homosexual agenda. This confirms it. Now I have two reasons why I will not be shopping at Target. Thanks for the post.

After that, I don't stress about boycotts. I know that the culture has a lot in it that disturbs me but I have little if any control over that.

But you do! "All politics is local" is the correct place to start, and the choices we make as shoppers make a difference at the local level AND the corporate boardroom level.

Your fight is misguided. Obviously, if pushing Christmas has brought us to this point, it's time to re-evaluate our battle plan. I don't think Christ would be pushing the issue. Christ won his battles in the backstreets, in the house of sinners and publicans, not in the markets and high places.

God said be in the world, but not of it. The salt has become unsavory, and it is thrown out to be trodden under the feet of men. Christmas in its form today has lost most of its meaning, and by continuing to force it down the throats of the people will only cause greater damage. Gods plan will not be altered, and all things must come to pass.

To end Christmas being forced down someone's throat why does the "Christmas tree" have to be renamed "holiday tree"?

I don't have a problem with a store or chain not celebrating my religious holidays. I DO have a problem with them subverting them, denying the religious association, and claiming they are secular.

That secular business holiday they celebrate is not what I celebrate. They have a misplaced focus and I choose to spend my money elsewhere at this time.

But I just don't get it. What does set me off so to speak is what I see as an over emphasis on Halloween. And Easter, I can't remember the last time I saw an Easter sign that was in any way religious.

It's called incrementalism. They took the religiousity out of those holidays and are now going after Christmas. Christians are banding together and saying "enough". You will not take away one of my most precious traditions. If you cannot have the decency to respect 85% of this country's beliefs, then I will give my business to someone who does.

The boycott is about Target and other retailers abandoning their own past support for the holiday.

In this time, they have added support for Communist holidays, gay holidays, and African Nationalism.

They have embraced the left and shunned Christians.

They are well within their right to do so. It is foolish to believe that they are following the same path they were once on.

I oppose political correctness. It is the liberal agenda and has infested industry as well as institutions of learning and government offices.

Opposing political correctness does not mean opposing women or minorities. It means opposing the entrenched notions of "thought crime" for dissenting from the liberal agenda.

A culture war is waging. Too few people took too soft of a stand for too long.

Some of us don't like to undergo re-education/indoctrination under the guise of "diversity training".
