Cities over 500,000:
Safest 10
San Jose, CA El Paso, TX Honolulu, HI New York, NY Austin, TX San Diego, CA Louisville, KY San Antonio, TX Fort Worth, TX Jacksonville, FL
Most Dangerous 10:
Detroit, MI Baltimore, MD Washington, DC Memphis, TN Dallas, TX Philadelphia, PA Columbus, OH Nashville, TN Houston, TX Charlotte, NC
I don't know if you have been downtown lately. But when I have visitors from out of state we are downtown until well after midnight. We usually finish with breakfast at MiTiera's.
I usually use a three wheel mobility vehicle when a lot of walking is involved. I do not feel unsafe ever, when we are downtown, or at the Riverwalk, or El Mercado, for that matter. That having been said there are areas of town that I would not like to be on foot at night.
Lest you say I am full of it, I do have a Part-Time job. Gets me out of an empty house and among people. It is for a Van co. that hauls railroad crews out to their trains, which are sometimes stopped in those areas. I have no problems there either.
In essence, I am am saying that San Antonio deserves a listing as safe, and comparatively clean also.
Hampstead if you mean Hamptons, isn't a suburb. :) But maybe you refer to somewhere else. My impression is that Nassau is in decline. Westchester will always be Westchester. I was in Chicago about 5 years ago. I was amazed that the ghetto between downtown and the University of Chicago had been largely cleared away, and become mostly black middle class. The other big change were the Hispanics. All of those white ethnic neighborhoods on the Southwest side going to Midway airport had become Hispanic. When I was in college, Chicago had one or two Mexican restaurants. That was IT in the entire city. That was a cultural shock for an Angelo, born and bred.
It is in the Safe list.
Nassau/Suffolk is on the safest 25 list (#16) of 330 metro areas.
So many lists, so little time. Maybe the New York metro area just is doing away with its underclass. Maybe they all moved to Camden.
Where is that list by the way?
The good times are rolling in NYC. Jobs are plentiful, 30 year olds will be taking home seven figure bonuses on Wall Street at the end of the year, and anyone who wants a job can pretty much find one.
Well, then learning that the area just west of Soldier Field is now all very expensive high rises, with more being built, should shock you even more.
The Hamptons are on Long Island........way, way, waaaaaaaaay out at the end of Long Island and I most assuredly know the difference between an exurb of N.Y.C, and a place at the outer edge of London proper. LOL
Nassau is a COUNTY on Long Island ( the North Shore) and is another topic altogether; Westchester is upstate. :-)
Maybe only since Dog the Bounty Hunter and his troops have been cleaning up the place.
Hampstead is pretty inner city no, albeit not has inner city as Chelsea and that other place, whose name escapes me. I thought you were referring to my post about Nassau, not London. LOL. Nassau will always have Manhasset.
My thoughts exactly. Seems an anti-septic town.
Actually murder and other violent crimes are significantly down in Chicago the past couple of years.
New Efforts to Stop Crime in Chicago Seem to Be Working - August 17, 2005
Quick summary of that article:
A) strategically placed cameras in high-crime areas help cops do their jobs to patrol and make arrests
ELIZABETH BRACKET: One of the other high-tech devices that has helped Chicago police reduce the crime rate is the placement of cameras on the top of light poles in neighborhoods where there is a large amount of known narcotic, gang and firearm related violence.
Sgt. Greg Hoffman - who is one of those in charge of the camera control room - says the cameras can even detect the sound of gunfire.
SGT. GREG HOFFMAN, Chicago Police: What happens is a visual and audible alert is sent to the crime detections specialists (siren) - What happens is the camera will turn in the direction of the gunshot report and zoom in on that location.
B) Intervention by non-profit community agencies
New policing strategies, though effective, are not the only methods being credited for lowering the murder rate in Chicago. Non-profit community organizations have also intervened to stop the violence. One of the most effective is a group called CeaseFire.
CeaseFire Illinois is a non-profit group with 70 paid workers who go into high-risk areas to try to reduce violence. Two-thirds of its funding comes from the state of Illinois.
C) Parolees are required to take a class = tough talk and interagency coordination
ELIZABETH BRACKET: The neighborhoods CeaseFire works in have seen a rising number of gang members return to the street after serving time in prison. It's estimated that 21,000 inmates will get out of Illinois prisons this year. That's why Chicago police, in cooperation with law enforcement from Cook County, the state of Illinois and the federal government, are also zeroing in on those neighborhoods with a new program dubbed Project Safe Neighborhoods. The project is very visible on billboards, radio and TV in the designated areas.
TV AD: Go to jail for a gun crime, and your family serves the sentence with you.
ELIZABETH BRACKET: Parolees in the targeted areas are required to attend meetings, where they face law enforcement representatives. A University of Chicago study found that only seven, or 1 percent, of the 700 who attended have committed another crime. One of the coordinators of Project Safe neighborhoods is David Hoffman, an assistant U.S. Attorney in the Chicago office.
I don't think your knowledge of At one time, Hampstead was the outer suburbs of London and the Heath was where "footpads" and other villains crept about at night. Both Wilkey Collins ( "THE LADY IN WHITE" ) and Dickens used the Heath and Hampstead in their books. So did Sir Arthur Connan Doyle, of I'm not mistaken.
Chicago is Chicago. Their statistics are theirs - they do not count the statistics of the suburbs in their crime figures.
Stay safe partner.

I'm not sure what the racial makeup of the city is. I do know that when I was driving a tractor trailer, a certain truck stop in Nashville was crawling with prostitutes, bums, dopers, etc. The a-holes would accost you from the time you arrived until the time you left.
The NPD was pretty busy trying to round up the a-holes. As far as truck stops go, Nashville was one of the worst.
On the same page as the original thread link. Scroll down to the bottom.
Blue Jays: Some liberal from DU is likely going to visit this forum and call you a racist for those terrible thoughts!
The funny thing is, I didn't say anything. The DU'r will have to project his own bias's into my statement to call me a racist. Those factors could be anything. Average income levels, or income differentials , education... the list goes on. But one has to already have made a judgment about race to project upon me the thought that I am racist.
Of curse, I writ it dat way un purple Blue Jays. Hee Hee Hee
That has been noted before. It's been suggested that Texas hispanics have a longer cultural presence in the state and feel part of the system. Or, that the more recent hispanic influx comes from a part of Mexico that is more law-abiding.
Whatever the reason, the hispanic presence in Texas doesn't equate to an increased level of violence and crime as seen in other states.
Of course, crimes are committed by people of all races in Texas so it's not hard to find exceptions to the rule, but your observation seems to be accurate.
