USC, Texas still 1-2 in BCS

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Southern California and Texas remain the top two teams in the BCS standings and only an upset in one of the final two weeks will prevent the two storied programs from meeting in the Rose Bowl on January 4 for the national championship.

The Trojans (11-0) had a close call this past weekend with a 50-42 victory over a tough Fresno State squad, but they'll have this week off before facing city rival UCLA on December 3.

The Longhorns (10-0), meanwhile, had their final bye this past Saturday and will play each of the next two weeks. First up will be the annual showdown with Texas A&M on Friday and then a trip to the Big 12 title game on December 3.

The final BCS standings will be released on December 4.

As of Monday, Southern California is still atop those standings with a BCS average of .9807, down from last week's .9829. Texas, meanwhile, gained some ground and has an average of .9791, up from last week's .9771.

Should one of those teams falter, Penn State, LSU or Virginia Tech would be ready to take a Rose Bowl spot.

Penn State is third in this week's BCS standings with an average of .8900. The Nittany Lions earned a share of the Big Ten title with Ohio State, but will represent the conference in the BCS thanks to a victory over the Buckeyes earlier this season.

LSU is fourth in the BCS and Virginia Tech is fifth. LSU controls its destiny for a berth in the SEC Championship game, while Virginia Tech can do the same in the ACC thanks to Miami-Florida's stunning loss to Georgia Tech this past Saturday.

Miami dropped from third in last week's BCS standings to ninth this week.

If Virginia Tech beats North Carolina this Saturday, the Hokies would play Florida State for the ACC title. An LSU victory over Arkansas this week would put the Tigers into the SEC title game against Georgia.

The champions from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-10 and Southeastern Conference make up six of the eight teams in the four BCS games -- the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta Bowls. The other two spots go to at-large teams.

One of those at-large berths will likely be Notre Dame, which needs only to beat Stanford this coming Saturday to lock up a BCS berth. The Irish, who stand eighth this week in the BCS, would then have the requisite nine wins to qualify for one of the BCS bowl games.

The BCS system uses a pair of human polls -- the Harris Interactive and the USA Today -- as well as six computer rankings. Each poll counts one-third toward the overall score, while the average of the computers completes the formula.

Thank you so much for beating those thugs from UM. And of course the fact Chan Gailey is a Gator alum makes it even better.

And to make it even better, Donna Shalala is the President of UM>

Just so you know, GA Tech, Southern Miss and Bowling Green all backed out of games against Auburn that were scheduled for the 2004 & 2005 seasons (that's 3 games over 2 years, not 3 each year). The contracts were signed years ago when the buyout for canceling was only $25,000, and the payoff for playing was lower than the usual $500,000. So, they walked toward more money and Auburn had to scramble to pick up anyone they could find.

national championship?

I don't think so, not with a loss when USC and Texas don't have losses....

But Auburn DID get burned by their kicker this year. How many did that guy miss against LSU? 7?

No...we've got fans all over the US...whereas people think Clemson is located in GA, and is a vocational school for learning impaired.

Exactly how many students does that educational farm in college station have this year, remind me?

If by "educational farm" you mean "outstanding, challenging school that produces top quality graduates that are leaders in all areas", here is some information:

Texas A&M University is a land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant institution located in College Station, Texas. The university is centrally located, approximately equidistant from three of the 10 largest cities in the United States (Houston, Dallas and San Antonio) and the State Capital (Austin). The university’s enrollment includes approximately 44,000 students studying for degrees in 10 academic colleges.

The Tennessee team sometimes looks like a criminal enterprise masquerading as a football team. According to this USA Today article, "But during the last 16 months, players frequently have fallen through. Tennessee football players have been in at least 20 incidents involving shoplifting, assault, gun charges, motor vehicle citations, disturbing the peace and failing a drug test."

Phil Fulmer leads an ethically-challenged football program.

Do you think LSU will still beat Georgia if we drop three touchdown passes like we did against Auburn?

Does Reggie have your vote this year?

--Reggie's 1,398 rushing yards is the most by a Trojan since Marcus Allen ran for 2,427 in his Heisman year of 1981

--In USC's three games against ranked foes this year (including two top 10 teams) Bush is averaging 192 yards and 9.93 yards per carry, with six TDs (including touchdown runs of 36, 45, 45 and 50 yards).

--In those games against ranked foes, he averaged 348 all-purpose yards per game

--With 2,338 all-purpose yards, Reggie has already surpassed his all-purpose yardage from last season, with two games to play....he has a good shot at the USC single-season record of 2,683 all-purpose yards set by Marcus Allen in 1981

--Reggie has 6,065 all-purpose yards in his three-year career, the most in a three-year career in NCAA history (surpassing Herschel Walker)

--That total is also the second-most in USC history behind only Charles White (6,545 yards)
He has tied the NCAA record for most seasons with 2,000 or more all-purpose yards (two, tied with 11 other players)

--After just three years, he is 19th all-time in NCAA history in all-purpose yardage....if Reggie were to return for a fourth year, he would be less than 1,200 yards from the all-time NCAA all-purpose yardage career mark held by Ricky Williams (7,206)

--Reggie is on pace for 2,763 all-purpose yards, which would be the fourth-best single-season mark in NCAA history.

--Reggie's 513 all-purpose yards against Fresno State was the second-most in NCAA history in a single game and just 65 yards off the record of 578 set by Emmett White of New Mexico State in 2000.
(note: it is much harder to put up 513 all-purpose yards than 500 yards of total offense, as Vince Young did. The passing yardage part of total offense is clearly easier to come by)

--Bush's seven 100-yard games this season are the most by a Trojan back in a season since Ricky Ervins had eight in 1989.

--He is averaging 10 yards every time he touches the ball in 2005

--He is now eighth on the prestigious all-time USC career rushing yardage chart with 2,827 yards and is averaging an incredible 7.1 yards per carry in his career. The only players ahead of him on this chart are four Heisman winners, two Heisman runners up and teammate LenDale White (by just 54 yards).

--Reggie's 513 yards outgained the greatest offense in history, which put up 508 yards

Geez... don't you hate kickers!?!

If not for a missed extra point against Cal in the triple-overtime loss, USC would be working on a 45 game winning streak.

Do you think he would have been a good fit though? He could gun the ball 100 yards but he lacked accuracy, he was a perfect match for TO's Power Option system though.

Hmmmmm...methinks the UT system is either twice to three times that size, so, I'll grant you A&M has a conservative campus, a military tradition, which I admire...no doubt, but UT has just as many conservatives...by sheer law of numbers.

But, this is a college football thread...and let's just say...Blinn's team is better than the Aggies this year, but hey...I hear they're going to let them transfer even if their GPA is .0008 this year...so things are looking up.

was it french flag day at the stadium?

An event occurred in the US on September 11, 2001. This is how Texas A&M chose to honor and remember those who lost their lives on that day.

On Sept. 22, 2001, about 70,000 Aggies donned red, white and blue T-shirts for the "Red, White and Blue Out" during the first football game after the Sept. 11 attacks. This movement was deemed "the greatest act of symbolic patriotism in the history of organized sports" by senior history and political science major Kevin Capps, whose parents - Debbie and Oral - were in the Twin Towers when the planes hit, but managed to escape.

Who cares? At least he wouldn't have been playing for Nebraska and running through our D like a hot knife through butter.

Auburn has some miserable kickers; John Vaughn missed 5 FGs against LSU!! We seem to be getting worse in this department each year.

That said, I think the SEC championship game is pretty much the NC game. While I'll give USC their due (for being an excellent team), UT's competition in Big 12 is a joke. Let UT play teams of some caliber and we'll know what they are truly made up of.

Thats Osborne mister. :). It may well have been one great game that was missed. Its one of the reasons why we have this messed up BCS system. But even if it had been implemented we still wouldnt have played, you guys would have still played the Pac 10 champ, remember the rose bowl wasnt going along with the early BCS system.I wonder if Garth Brooks is still willing to put up money to settle the argument?

I remember JoePa challenged Osborne to a final game that year.

And Osborne never even responded.

Remember that?
