The voters did what the TV told them to do.

Yes, and it was the dirtiest, most distorted, most lying TV campaign from the Left I've ever seen -- and I've seen some bad ones. Whether the sheeple can be manipulated or not, it's a left-wing victory. A win's a win.

As for the sense of urgency for reform, the upshot is that now Republicans will be blamed entirely for the slow-motion disaster in CA. As far as I'm concerned it's the worst of all possible outcomes. And already our SchwarzenKennedy is promising to "compromise" with the Bolsheviks in the Legislature. Sometimes I wonder if this whole thing was engineered from Hyannisport.

The dumb@sses in LA do it every time. They have never seen a school bond they didn't vote yes on. And what do we have to show for it? This could go on forever. The schools will continue to stink and the voters will continue to think more money will solve the problem. What a scam.

I find it ironic that you chose the name "goldstateGOP" and don't even bother to vote.

Good point.

But what if an initiative goes on the ballot saying that no newly hired govt employees get a defined pension but instead must do a 401k like the rest of us? This measure like prop 75 makes good sense, so of course the unions will have to outspend 10 to 1 to defeat it.

We can't give up or capitulate. Keep fighting. I'm very discouraged but if we give up things will only get worse.

We also need a new state GOP chair.

"And no, I didn't vote yesterday - saw no reason to."

Very well, you are the first guy to officially receive my rant from #1233:

You got the government you deserve on November 8th, 2005, and f*** you very much.

We don't agree on much, but I'd like to echo your sentiments on those who did not vote.

Reagan also lost 38 years ago on an off year election regarding spending limits in California as well.
The same thing happened, the common people stayed home and all the unions and government employees came out to make Reagan lose.

I'm not sure if I can recall, but later I think Reagan came back to do a bit better.

We did great and no way against 20% of a billion in ad spending and no general public coming out to vote were we going to win these.

I think it is a great victory. We made them waste 200 million, including special assessments to the paychecks of these union workers.

Lets do it again at least a couple of election cycles and bankrupt the scoundrels.

It's cheap to put up the propositions, so lets get them out there and we do two good things.

#1 Impoverish the unions, and
#2 Eventually the propositions we want will pass.

Baloney.

Where were the conservatives yesterday? Arnold's as conservative as we can get in California right now.

Yes, parental notification init loss, was a stunner; and very revealing.

Speaks to what the liberals and unions who dominated these turn outs feel about it. Sure reads like Satan's foot soldiers instead of fellow citizens, doesn't it?

In a regular election, that can get passed.

Show me any other measure on the ballot or on the floor of the Legislature that would have been more fiscally conservative. Go ahead.

If you recall, there were two alternative spending cap measures presented to Schwarzenegger this year. He chose the weak one--that also included all of the borrowing provisions. Here is one article from the Orange County Register, 03/17/2005

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday backed a ballot initiative that would require fewer spending cuts than the reform measure he proposed during his State of the State speech in January - an apparent softening of his views on a key element of his reform agenda.

The "California Live Within Our Means Act," drafted by members of a business-backed political committee, would let the state budget increase in line with past revenue growth.

Though billed as a solution to California's chronic overspending, the measure's formulas, if enacted a decade ago, would have let lawmakers spend more than they actually spent in four of the last five years, according to state budget data.

In January, Schwarzenegger backed a proposal that would have limited state spending to available revenue and enabled the governor to make across-the-board cuts when the Legislature failed to adopt a balanced budget.

That measure would have prevented the state's current fiscal crisis by forcing lawmakers to raise taxes or cut spending to keep each year's budget in line with available revenue.

The proposal still exists as a bill in the Legislature. But by endorsing the ballot measure, Schwarzenegger is effectively abandoning his earlier idea...

I like your thinking. Kind of like Reagan outspending the Soviet Union to death.

The unions have to outspend us 10 to 1 in order to brainwash people and conduct a proper character assassination.

Baloney. Where were the conservatives yesterday?

Has there been exit polling done on how voters described their personal beliefs? Who's to say it was conservatives that did not show up, as opposed to moderates?

Calif is not whacked.....it is the SF Bay Area and LA that are whacked....get out of those areas and this state is a great place to live.....most people who have never lived or visited here would be astounded how most of Calif DOES NOT resemble SF or LA.....and I've been to 40 states....it is just that as usual....the libs and whackos get the press.. remember, more people voted for Bush here then any other state....but the transplants that invaded us years ago have decidedly moved this state far more left then it used to be....still....there are some wonderful and great places in this state...and none of these lib things effect my standards of living except for maybe the ludicrous home prices

Yes, they outspent the heck out of us.

We need to make them spend the hell out of their reserves for a few elections and then we will fillet them.

I would somewhat disagree... did you see how many of the "more conservative" counties voted on the props?

yes I did.....but did you see how many people voted?... the turn out was abyssmal....and that I do agree with others that Calif voters are lazy.....for sure....and I do think this off year election was a bad idea and it was not covered all that well here....with so much going on in Calif, voters lost interest and the union's huge bankroll to defeat these props won out in the end....my reference was that some people here listen to the news only and then generalize their comments to the whole of Calif....which just is not true

>>Could you please explain to me WHY someone without a vested interest in keeping the status quo in the legislature would oppose Prop. 77?

Here were a few of my reasons.
