Paris/France burns, Live thread (night #10)

Posted on 11/05/2005 9:39:59 AM PST by Dane

It is now getting dark in Paris and in all of France(appx. 6:40 PM Paris Time), and if there are any French FR lurkers(lurquers), this may be the thread to post your reports about any further violence.

It seems the French govt. is impotent in it's response to what seems are jihadist thugs and it seems the American media has put a news blackout filter to what is really happening, so as not to embarass their heroes, Chirac et al.

So any news reports or personal reports from what happens tonight are welcome, and don't worry about broken English, reports in French are welcome also, I have no doubt someone can translate.

I really dread putting up a live thread about such a matter, but it seems that the American MSM is following French govt. orders to play down to what it seems is an insurrection.

"...and don't forget, Rome has Europe's biggest mosque."

I didn't realize that. Thank you for the information.

"The 900 vehicles were burned yesterday. The 10 day total is of course higher."

Thanks for the correction, its worse that I thought.

> Can anyone IMAGINE Giuliani reacting to rioters in this way?

Nope. Here is from Le Monde posted today at 2:31 pm eastern.

Urban violence: appeals for calm and the mobilization of the state

On the day following a ninth night of riots, during which 900 vehicles were set fire to and some 250 people arrested, mostly in Ile-de-France, but more and more in the provinces, deputy UMP Nicolas Dupont-Aignan said Saturday that he thought Jacques Chirac was "curiously dumb" and asked him "to quickly address quickly to the Nation" as regards measures to be taken in the present emergency. The entourage of the president of the Republic, solicited by AFP, let know that Mr. Chirac would express himself on urban violence "at the proper time, if it considers it necessary".

S.O.S Racisme denounced in an official statement "the increasing number of incomprehensible messages from meetings" and requested that the Prime Minister organize a round table "with a view to exceed simple police work and to draw future plans for the urban ghettos".

The president of the National Front, Jean-Marie la Pen, denounced for his part on Radio Courtesie "the impotence of those governing". The party of extreme right continues to demand the introduction of a state of emergency in the districts touched by violence.

The bishops of France then expressed their "serious concern" in the face the violence of these last days. "We believe that repression and incitement with collective fear are not a response to the high and dramatic tensions of our society", declared Mgr Jean-Pierre Ricard, archbishop of Bordeaux and president of the Conference of the bishops of France, in an official statement. He believes it "vital" to open cities to the often desperate young people, "a future of freedom, dignity and respect of others".

The vice-chancellor of the Grand Mosque of Paris, Dalil Boubaker, stated that he awaited "words of peace" from the government. Without expressly condemning the recent remarks of Mr. Sarkozy, in particular the use of the term "rabble" [racaille, translated as "scum" elsewhere], he recalled that "in such difficult circumstances, each word has its importance". Dominique de Villepin briefly got it Saturday, according to Mr. Boubakeur, in expressing his respect to the whole Muslim community. The Prime Minister also ensured that, according to the investigation into the teargas grenade which went off Sunday at the Clichy-under-Wood mosque, the grenade was not in any manner aimed by the police. It was an unhappy accident".

Dominique de Villepin, who met with eight ministers in Matignon, asked them to affirm their unity and the firmness of the government."Le government is unanimous on firmness", underlined Nicolas Sarkozy at the exit, and "we continue an extremely strong action". The Minister of Interior Department denied that the night arrests would carry "the ten objects of deferment before justice, which will pronounce judgments[?]". After the deep divisions of the beginning of week, the Minister for employment Jean-Louis Borloo affirmed that "we are at work ... within the framework of a united government". He was charged "to accelerate" the installation of plans of urban restoration and social cohesion. Lastly, Mr. Sarkozy brought together in his office the persons in charge of the police "to take stock" of violence.

How about," rioters will be shot on site."

They will get to that eventually, or they will all go down . . .

Thank you. I appreciate it. I am hopeful that france will serve as the wakeup call for the rest of Western Europe; Spain, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and most importantly ENGLAND!!! There is a HUGE muslim population that has said quite clearly their intent is to become a population majority and then take the country by force! God help us if we lose England to islamist fanaticism. THAT will cost us BIG TIME. I hope and pray that the rest of Europe will wake up because of france, stop spending so much time and effort in cracking down on Christians and Jews, and return to REAL democracy and freedom, and start deporting millions of muslims back to the land of camels and palm trees. England can still be saved, if they REALLY snap to. It unfortunately seems like you never hear about the England bombings anymore, like out of sight out of mind makes it where it didn't happen and muslims are no longer a threat in England anymore. THAT is a FOOLISH line of thought if that's how it is now.

I have a question for you since we are across the pond: Prince Charles’s seemingly affinity for the Moslem religion. Any comments?

Thank you.

There is no reason to desire anarchy on our doorstep.

France won't fall into anarchy because the world cannot permit her nuclear weapons to fall into Islamic hands. It is estimated that France has 350 nuclear warheads (5,300 km range) as of January, 2004.

Prince Charles has an affinity for Camilla Parker Bowles too. Neither is a basis for taking him seriously. Thank God he's in a position where he has guaranteed to have no real political power.

Regards, Ivan

You're absolutely right, Ivan, about not cheering this on. I happen to be living at the moment in the land of Theo van Gogh, and I'm relieved that the anniversary is past, with no significant disturbances.

While a general anti-French sentiment is certainly at the root of many comments on these Paris burning threads, there are deeper, more serious reasons for following this news. Wrechard, over at Belmont Club made this insightful comment:

"The events in France may turn out to have a greater strategic impact than September 11. French policies, however maddening, had the virtue of serving as the control case to the American experiment of attempting to reform the Islamic world. The latter acknowledged, however shyly, that it was facing an aggression which had to be met at the root; which had to be resolved by building viable societies in Islamic homelands. The former, and France in particular, maintained there was nothing that temporizing and appeasement, in one form or another, could not solve. What events in France have done is discredit the liberal recipe so badly that even those who are not prepared to admit that American policy may have been right must now root around for an alternative theory. Fukuyama's essay [quoted extensively by Wretchard] is a good step in that direction. Faster please."

Many of us are perhaps hoping that this will result in the abandonment of lousy policies and methods. Yes, faster please.

If we sold the French a car with it's own 5 gallon gas can in the trunk and a gas soaked rag, we could sell 36,500 cars over the next 10 years.
