I think its a big deal because it turns the process into a drawn-out political campaign. I bet the MSM starts tracking polls, etc. Pathetic.

This is Specter thumbing his nose at the White House and us. He was practically in tears last week when Miers withdrew, as he knew it was a victory for the right. This is payback.
Let's see, Miers was nominated Oct. 3 and they were figuring to start hearings Nov. 7. She needed only 35 days, or so they thought.
Roberts was nominated Jul. 20, hearings set for Sep. 6. He needed 48 days.
Alito is nominated Oct. 31 and he won't get a hearing until Jan. 7---68 days. Would that be because he needs so much more preparation than Roberts, and twice as much as Miers did?
Some would say the Senate is performing as designed.
Then I look back and reflect on the Clinton Impeachment debacle and their behavior since. A pitiful performance, indeed.
The Founding Fathers could have never envisioned how riddled full of ideologues and despots this body would one day become and how injurious it would then be to this nation's long-term well-being.
Still can't believe Bush saved this clown's hide in 2004.
Senators are not about to interrupt or limit their holiday vacations and junkets for these hearings.
It's even worse than that....every day without Justice Alito is another day WITH the ever dependable Sandra Day O'Connor.
No; the hearings started later for Roberts than the (scheduled) hearings for Miers because the Senate is out in August. These pompous blowhards aren't going to interrupt planned vacations, holiday and junkets for SCOTUS hearings. Work between Thanksgiving and New Years? The Horrah!
At this moment, the count stands at six nominations for Ciruit Courts of Appeal, "under the bus."
Myers and Boyle - out of Committee. Myers since March.
Haynes, Kavanaugh, Saad and Neilson have been in Judiciary Committe since February - but ALL of them were "carry over" nominations from the 108th Congress. Haynes is the nomination with the shortest amount of time in Committee - his nomination string only goes back to Sept. 29, 2003.
This pisses me off! Geeezzzz!
Did anyone really think that they would proceed w/hearings on Alito when the Thanksgiving holidays followed shortly by the Christmas and New Year's holidays were on the immediate horizon? Now, frankly, would you give up your vacation periods to do hearings? I think not. Remember, a lot of these Senators have to travel great distances back and forth to their states, plus they use a lot of their vacation time for politicking back in the home state, and fund raising. Just occasionally, I think there shouldn't be such a gut reaction to not getting what we want when we want it. Alito has a long track record and it's going to take both sides some time to plow through it all. I'm not hearing any Pub Senators squawking about this date for hearings on TV so far.
It would have been preferable from our political viewpoint to have them sooner, so that O'Connor won't be sitting on the SC for too long, but I doubt any key cases will be actually decided before January anyhow. Someone correct me if this is wrong. One of you lawyer types out there, please answer this question if you can: When Alito assumes his seat on the Supreme Court in January (assuming he is approved, which he will be), on cases that came before the court prior to his arrival (from the beginning of the term until mid-January), will O'Connor be able to vote on them, or is it voted on w/out her having a vote, but neither will Alito have a vote, or will Alito have a vote? I would assume that once O'Connor is gone, she no longer has a vote, and any case during the interim period would be voted on by 8 justices, rather than 9. What's the straight poop on this? Anyone know?
How bad are they going to feel if something happens to O'Conner's husband in the mean time?
Why on earth do they have to wait so long? Does the Senate get a two month vacation for Christmas?
