...and how many votes away would we be if Meir's had been confirmed? Can't we be allowed to celebrate this great day?

Some people just won't move on. Miers is last week's news.

However, there's no reason to celebrate just yet. The President has done his job; now it's time for the Senate to do it's job. Until Alito is confirmed, we haven't accomplished a damn thing. Time, as I said last week, to run our guns up to the top of the ridge and prepare for "The Mother Of All Battles!"

We would have been two votes away with Meirs IMHO so of course we can celebrate. That's what I'm doing.

Why did you do a Maureen Dowdification of my words? I posted: We have reduced all nominees to a fight over their political leanings. As Mark Steyn said, we are getting a system of rule by nine parliamentarians. I do not think we will like who gets on the court in the future, when libs are in the driver's seat. We have given up what little leverage over their picks that I thought we had.

You responded with: "we will like who gets on the court in the future when libs are in the driver's seat."

Sorry. I do not get your point.

Milk toast moderate conservatives do not pick hard conservatives for the supreme court, like Alito appears to be. You can also prove that clinton was no moderate by his nominees. ruth bader "girl sex at 12" ginsburg, and steven "foreign precedent" breyer, flaming liberal and nothing but. clinton was and is a flaming liberal socialist pig, and Bush is a conservative, there are just a couple thiings he seems to have had a brain fart on and thinks he needs to be nicey nice kissy face huggy pie
warm fuzzy with the democrats sometimes and he's wrong. They didn't vote for him, never do, don't like him, never will, so frankly, piss on democrats, they won't ever work as a team anyway, so who cares what they think? Let them twist in the wind all 8 years with nothing constructive to show their constituants at the end when they are to be re-elected for all I care. NOT my problem. democrats never accomplish anything anyway, other than killing babies, gutting the military, raising taxes, and stopping the conservative agenda from getting any work done. That's a democrat resume' for you.

What bothers me is how are Miers opponents going to tell the Dem's that he deserves an up or down vote without being laughed out of punditry.

What on earth are you talking about? Miers voluntarily withdrew her own nomination prior to hearings. We never got to the point of an up or down vote.

The up or down vote principle is intact and will be used in the Alito hearings. Unless, of course, he were to voluntarily withdraw his nomination as well. I hope that doesn't happen. Unlike Miers, he seems to be fully competent.

If you are from Tennessee, you should know that you cannot count on Bill Frist for anything, except a great operation and recovery if you need heart surgery!!!!!!!!

And Lamar! isn't much better!

How the heck a solidly red state like TN could elect two squishy Senators (without much relief on the horizon) is beyond me.

He's really calling out Frist here. If, back in the spring, Frist had grown some cojones, corralled the RINOS and gotten the Constitutional option passed, Judge Alito's path would be much easier.

The DEMs, or whoever is obstructing, controls whether or not the nuclear option can come out to play. The only context the nuclear option can play in is a failed cloture motion, after adequate debate. If the cloture motion passes, then no nuclear option.

Frist failed to igite the nuke on the failed cloture motion for Bolton. So, I agree that Frist held fire, but in the context of olton, it may have been that Voinovich and others would have caused the nuclear option to fail.

The dynamics are completely different with this nomination. I'll be surprised if there is a failed cloture motion, i.e., "filibuster."

I was just pointing the jerk (Hennican) left out "informed" and word consent is there. But there's much more to Casey and the Pennsylvania law than just the husband part. Naturally Hennican ignores that.

Kristol on Fox saying he likes Alito "very much" and mentioning he had always put him in his top five. "An awfully impressive pick." "A very strong pick."

Glad to hear it. Thanks for posting.

Well, Hell has frozen over. A conservative judge from New Jersey.

Actually, two. Scalia is also originally from Trenton.

Trenton is a great city to be from -- far from.

He is born on April Fool's day.
Nominated to the Supreme Court on Halloween.
What does that mean?

I just popped over to DU to see how their mood was this morning. In a Thread titled "Alito Nomination Dead Before It Begins" they post "if we keep the pressure up, this one will die faster than Bush's groupie Harriet.

Bush has no more political capital to spend, and we need to make our elected representatives in the Senate aware that we will accept no Bush nominations AT ALL for SC that are not well-known moderates."

It's nice to be fighting the bad guys again.....
