The way Amherst College President Anthony Marx sees it, the high-profile CIA leak case 'is all Amherst from start to finish.'
Marx told guests at the third annual town-gown luncheon at the college Alumni House Wednesday that he is eager to hear whether indictments will be handed down in the investigation into who outed covert CIA agent Valerie Plame.
Amherst College has ties to three key players, Marx said. Besides Patrick Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor, a 1982 graduate, there is Jonathan Landman, the New York Times deputy managing editor who first expressed doubts about the paper's Iraq coverage before the war started. Landman graduated in 1974 and was appointed a college trustee in 2003.
Then there is Jack Eckenrode, the FBI agent heading the investigation. He is not an alum, but his son is a student in a first-year seminar Marx teaches called 'Conflict and Cohesion.'
It is high time for an alumni magazine article about Fitzgerald, Marx observed.
Paul Statt, the college's spokesman, said he has been fielding questions all week from national media outlets interested in learning more about Fitzgerald. Statt suggested that reporters interview Walter Nicholson, Fitzgerald's former economics professor. The New York Times did that, and included his comments in a front-page profile of Fitzgerald on Oct. 22.
The Times portrayed Fitzgerald as being professionally meticulous, personally sloppy and a 'hilarious raconteur' as well as a 'workaholic' known for his 'hapless bachelor ways.'
Nicholson, in the story, describes him as a stellar student other students often turned to for help.
'I didn't know much about his personal life when he was a student,' Nicholson said this week. 'But I really do remember him being both a very good student but also a laid-back student - not in the sense of not caring about his work, obviously - but in not caring about how he dressed. I'm actually kind of surprised to see him in suits all the time.'
Landman, who graduated in 1973, is a marathon runner, cello player and a self-described 'incorrigible New Yorker and Yankee fan,' Statt wrote in a 2003 press release announcing his appointment as trustee.
Eckenrode, whose son is at Amherst now, gets kudos from Valerie Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, in a Philadelphia Inquirer article. Wilson calls him 'serious,' 'committed,' 'thoughtful,' 'thorough,' and 'extraordinarily discreet.' A spokeswoman for the special prosecutor told the Inquirer Fitzgerald believes Eckenrode 'defines what it is to be an FBI agent.'
I'm so glad I chose not to attend this "esteemed" institution.

He is also involved in the Abramov case, and the investigation into the anthrax vaccination program.
You can't actually see most of this stuff since it appears at the FBI's employee newsletter site and you have to be an employee to get in (readily).
This strengthens my thought that the FBI has an AlQaida operative who has successfully infiltrated management in DC.

The sad thing is they are destroying these schools. It used to be that graduating from there meant something. Now it means something else.

AMAZING!!! Has anyone connected the dots as to how Wilson and Eckenrode is connected? This may be why Wilson wasn't called to testify.

Someone tell me again why President Bush chose this guy..........I am really starting to think the President either has $hit for taste in people, or extremely bad advice from his advisors.
