"People have the impression that teens and unmarried mothers are synonymous," said Stephanie Ventura of the National Center for Health Statistics.
But last year teens accounted for just 24 percent of unwed births, down from 50 percent in 1970, she commented.
The increases in unmarried births have been among women in their 20s, she said, particularly those 25 to 29.

I have a co-worker who has two children from two different fathers, neither of which care to see their kids, nor pay a dime for them.
The girl is in her early 20's and is already on many forms of state assistance to help pay for her poor choices. Housing assistance, free medical, free dental, food stamps, free day care, the works.
She's obviously able to work, since she's working here, but she only wants to work part-time. See, if she works ful time then she makes too much money, and will lose much of her assistance.
We were talking earlier this week about medical insurance, and I was talking about how expensive mine is. $420 a month, plus a $500 deductible per person, per year. She starts bragging about her "plan", saying that she gets everything free and "it dont' cost me nothin' - it's great!"
I simply said, "you're welcome" and walked out of the room.
Welfare, single parenting, one-night hook-ups that result in kids were once shameful things that used to carry a stigma. No longer. Now they're proud of how well they're screwing the system to get everything for free.
Makes me sick, to be perfectly honest.
That's something to be real proud of.
Formal marriage is more or less irrelevant in Scandinavia and elsewhere in North-Western Europe as a social arrangement these days. This does not mean that folks don't live in monogamous relationships. It's just that formal marriage, a formalization of a human relationship, is not anymore seen as the only possible indicator of a long-term commitment between a man and woman.
Oh, I think marriage is extremely important, especially if you want children. But being a realist, I see it becoming less and less important to the younger generation. So many children have siblings they don't even know. I don't expect it to get better any time soon.
Our company is self-insured for health insurance, so we have paid for two of those babies. Yes, he got two women in the office pregnant.

I guess it all depends, but I sure seem to be buying lots of wedding presents for nieces and nephews these days. Seems like there's a wedding every other week in my family and my wife's family. And the ones that are already married? Man, they're making babies at a frightening rate.
This is going to adversely affect my bank balance, I'm sure. As a childless uncle and aunt, my wife and I...well let's just say there are expectations of us.

That's the dilemma, for us. We are charitable, and help as we can...even as we disapprove of the dynamics that create this situation. And, as we help, we help this situation get even more dominant.

The way you've written your post suggests that you approve, or at any rate don't disapprove.
But you may be interested in the results of a long-term study I've just completed on this subject:
Having children out of wedlock is a very bad thing.
Looks like they're well on their way to accomplishing their goals. And our public schools are all too happy to step up and help.
Remember, the ideal family structure has changed from mother-father-child to mother-bureaucrat-child.
Marriage is an institution that appears to have "run its course" in terms of utility for men. I see many guys of marrying age in my office who avoid it like the plague because there are many pitfalls and very few advantages.

I think marriage is more beneficial to men than women. Most women I know who are divorced and not young have no intention of getting married again. Just no benefit.
Of course, the whole high divorce rate is a scam. If you look at the number of people whom marry once and stay married, it is higher than 50%.
