Category Three Major Hurricane Wilma is barreling toward the Southwest Florida coastline. The storm is packing wind speeds of 125mph, moving NW at 20mph, with an enormous eye 65 miles in diameter. Landfall is anticipated shortly in Collier County between 6:00 and 7:00AM ET.

Storm surge flooding of 9 feet to 17 feet is possible along the coast near and to the south of where Wilma makes landfall. Storm surge of 5 to 8 feet is predicted for the Keys. The storm has spawned tornados throughout the Florida peninsula since yesterday evening.

I can't believe that it's gotten completely silent on this thread for the past few hours. Not even Weather Underground is updating the tracking maps any more.

Wilma may be out in the ocean and Alpha may have tanked, but it sure looks like she's not done unleashing her wrath on the Northeast.

Why did the updates stop?

Thanks for the Orlando area update. A few news reports made it sound as though the big theme parks were nearly damaged beyond repair. Very relieved to hear all is well in your neighborhood. We certainly did luck out with fabulous weather to follow nasty Miss Wilma.

Statement as of 5:00 am EDT on October 25, 2005

 
...Wilma beginning to weaken as it races northeastward...

At 5 am EDT...0900z...the center of Hurricane Wilma was located near
latitude 34.8 north... longitude 70.0 west or about 310 miles...
505 km... east of Cape Hatteras North Carolina.

 
Wilma is moving toward the northeast near 53 mph ...85 km/hr...and
this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours...keeping
Wilma well offshore of the northeastern United States.

 
Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph...185 km/hr...with higher
gusts.  Additional weakening is forecast during the next 24
hours...and Wilma is expected to lose tropical characteristics
during the next day or so.

 
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 105 miles...165 km...
from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up
to 430 miles...695 km.

 
Estimated minimum central pressure is  965 mb...28.50 inches.

 
Although Wilma will not be directly affecting the U.S. East
Coast...high surf is presently occurring along the mid-Atlantic
states.  Please consult products issued by your local weather
office.

Thanks, Patty. I called the Davie Police Department last night and they were gracious enough to send a patrol car to check up on her. Still no word. We got a relative driving down from Tampa and we're on stand by to get on a plane if needed.

With 98% of the area without electricity, the telephone systems are running on backup generators only. With so many calls coming through, the backup generators are running out of juice.

They are asking that call be limited to emergenies only.

I can imagine. But this is a 23 year old student at Florida Atlantic U. and is there by her lonesome. Now I can't even raise my sister in Weston anymore to go check up on her. At least I saw the casualty list and she ain't in it.

I heard CBS Radio news at 9am. Only a brief mention of Florida, then a report live from Eastern Long Island -- where 2200 people have lost power. 2200!!!! Oh, but it's New York, so it's much more important!

Thanks for the link. My mother is coming over here to stay until electricity is restored in Martin Co. (Stuart). By Florida standards, it's a tad chilly for the elders today and tomorrow, down to 51º this morning.

Read this morning the power grid in Broward was damaged. Estimated 4 weeks for full restoration.

Wrong about the phone. AT&T says a large area has a broken box and Bell South won't be hooking up the houses for a week, as they are prioritizing doing the electricity first. However, as I was the first to call, my Aunt's house will be the first hooked back up in that area....anyway that's what the fellow said after he worked the problem for several hours. Thank you to Rafael in Texas!

Daisy at Home Depot in Hialeah is getting blue tarp and firring etc. together...although I think they got much more firring than we need. They made an exception and took a credit card phone order although their computers are down.

Now I'm trying to reach the taxi driver to pick it up and take it over to her house.
