There's a new fad of students -- mostly girls -- wearing pajama bottoms to school, and so far administrators are not making a fuss about it.
"Some days you don't want to get dressed up for school. Like when it's raining and cold. You just want to be cozy," said Ben Lomond High School junior Elvia Escalante, 16.
School administrators in Ogden, Weber and Davis school districts say the pajamas have been modest and there hasn't been a problem.
"There are worse things a kid could wear to school," said Ross Lunceford, principal of Hillcrest Elementary School in Ogden.
"There's a fine line there, and I think sometimes we need to pick our battles. Should we get into a tussle over pajamas?" said Eileen Nicholas, student and family services teacher specialist for Ogden district.
Some students don't think much of the attire.
"They may be comfy, but it makes you look trashy and it gives you the idea you can just slack off for the day," said Ben Lomond High School senior Alena Marshall, 18.
"I absolutely HATE rewashing clean clothes that have only gotten dirty because they dusted the floor and not been worn."
My mom, back in my early 60's High School days, had a solution about her kids' laundry. Each of us had a clothes hamper in our rooms. Each of us was responsible for our own laundry, including ironing.
Since we were all dating, we did a pretty good job of keeping our clothing decent-looking.
I can still iron a dress shirt almost as fast as the laundry can. I don't do it much, though, since I rarely wear such a thing.
Let your kids do their own laundry.
It may not be the same across all stores, but in the stores in the Pittsburgh area, it's too obvious to miss. In fact, just got a chai there--and sure enough, the only male there was a complete flamer. By "complete" I mean "complete with lisp, prance and hairdo."
I like 'dress down' church too. Not pretentious.
Send'em home and tell them that when they have appropriate apparel for school, they may return - NOT before!! Somehere along the line these kids have to be prepared to enter the workforce and this is NOT the way to do it!!!
Well thank goodness my kids school does not allow this nonsense.there is dress code in place as there should be.
Perhaps it would start with these, but it would soon degenerate to Victoria's Secrets eveningwear. It is a slippery slope.
Yes they are and they aren't afraid to break the molds. If you and others would look past appearances and actually get to know some of these kids personally, you'd see your preconceived ideas of them are really silly.
These are the young men and women who are and will be serving YOU and this country in the future. Not all Gen X'ers have reared selfish or lazy children. There are quite a number of us who have gone back to emphasizing the really important things to our children. So what if a kid wears lounge pants to school? So what if their jeans or torn? Instead of tearing them down because of what they wear, encourage them for what they do right.
As I replied to someone else, IMHO, the downhill slide in dressing began with the boomers....in fact, there were hip hugger pants during the 60's.
you haven't seen girls wearing boys boxers as tho they were shorts? 2 minutes with a sewing machine to close the fly and they're done.
ROFL! when i was in school the fad was the $100 pre-ripped and patched USED (yeah, that's the brand name) jeans.
Actually, I don't mind doing laundry that much. I just don't like doing it when it's not necessary.
My oldest does already. She came back from lifeguarding at camp last year and told me that she was so used to doing her own laundry that she'd keep doing it from now on. You could have knocked me over with a feather! I think the real reason is that she was tired of me mixing up her and her sister's clothes all the time. It's OK by me.
I have been giving some serious thought to getting my 13 yr old started on this since she's the worst offender in this area. I don't mind doing my 15 yr. son's because he is soooo good about doing stuff for me whenever I need a favor (body: strength or height), promptly and without complaining. I consider it a favor to him because of his great attitude. He does know how to do it, though. He learned at the same camp, from his sister. LOLOL

Sounds like a great kid! Congrats!
there are some tragically obese people that have NO business wearing ANYTHING like that.
"spandex, its a priveledge, not a right!"
cereal killer; hackers.
What's wrong with pants?
This was a fad when I first entered high school, some nine or ten years ago.
Exactly correct. There is one particular girl at my church, with a surprisingly nicely shaped bottom for a teenager, who seems to own nothing but skin tight jeans (you know, the kind you have to zip up on the side to get into).
Major distraction for myself and several others I've caught looking. But how do you get the situation corrected without it looking like you've been ogling her for a while?
