The Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan used Hurricane Katrina to make some of his most bigoted and conspiratorial statements yet. But civil rights groups still can't bring themselves to shun him.
The NAACP, the National Urban League, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were all expected to join Farrakhan at his "Millions More Movement" march Saturday in Washington, D.C.
Far from being, as popularly believed, focused on the worthy goal of strengthening black families, Farrakhan's demonstration has an extremist agenda.
"We demand full and complete Reparations (sic) for the descendants of slaves," says its statement of purpose. The same statement also demands "freedom for all political prisoners held in U.S. prisons and detention facilities, both foreign and domestic" an apparent reference to Arab terrorists in U.S. custody abroad.
For decades, Farrakhan has been known for his statements of hate, included his reference to Judaism as a "gutter religion."
Last week he said New Orleans levee breaks may have been "all part of a fabric" of government deceit that includes the 9-11 attacks and the 2000 election recount.
"When the government wants something, they have to justify what they want by doing something whether it injures a hundred, whether it injures a thousand, whether it injures millions," Farrakhan said. He added that "it is the duty of government to either prove the rumor is false or prove that their suspicions are true and that somebody is . . . guilty of mass murder."
Farrakhan has discouraged donations to the American Red Cross. Why? "FEMA is too white to represent us and so is the Red Cross, so we're going to demand our place at the table," the Houston Chronicle quoted Farrakhan saying in September.

Louie is a Mugabe wannabe
"Louie is a snake and so is his Allah."
I almost agree with you, I don't like snakes, but I don't want to lower them to the level of Farrakhan.
I have a few rat snakes on the property and they are nice little guys...kind of shy and just doing their job (looking for dinner).
Evil is a different kind of serpent...a different kind of reptile.
If anyone's interested, it's being replayed right now on C-Span. They just showed an audience shot, and most of the seats were empty. Even the MSN headline story admits the gathering was significantly smaller than the march 10 years ago.
Follow the money.
That's what they said on the FOX Report tonight also.
They yelled prqaises about Mugabe at the rally about land redistibution but forgot to mention he ruined all of the crops and the country is in a nose dive.
