White House warns holdouts

White House officials have a message for conservative Republican senators who have expressed doubt about supporting Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers.

The West Wing types argue that she will turn out to be just as conservative as President Bush says she is, and voting against her would be an embarrassment over the long term. This message is intended for holdouts including Sam Brownback of Kansas, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

"If Miers is confirmed and she winds up being what the president says she is, Republican senators who voted against her will look quite foolish," says a GOP insider. This could cause a backlash against these legislators from conservative Bush supporters at the grass roots.

Watching this stuff is fun. Never before have so many Republicans resorted to so many liberal like attacks on other Republicans...simply because they disagree with the President's pick.

The new bozo attack of the day is to say the Constitutionally the executive nominates with consent of the Senate...so throw away you rights to speak on the matter....in essence, shut up.

What a Party.

"I happen to be in the "hold your nose and very reluctantly support her because the president has made a big bloody mistake and I don't want it to turn into a huge, smashing defeat" crowd. Half the time, I feel like I'm compromising my principles to go even that far. And I ran hundreds of volunteers for W in the last two elections and am a party official."

I originally shared this sentiment. But consider that defeating the nominee would very likely rally much of the base behind the Senate GOP. Which we need a helluva lot more than we need to rally around Bush, going into 2006. As has been stated ad nauseum: Bush isn't running again, for anything, ever. We need to be focused on congress until 08.

Many of the people supporting Bush on this pick without reservation, would be defending Bush were he to nationalize all private industry in the country. They're conservatives second, Bush men first. As AF brutally points out, all criticism of Bush is treason to him. There's no compromise with that and there's no future in embracing it. The people who are the future of the party, understand the electoral implications of dividing the base and attacking movement leaders who inform opinion.

Please - I gave money to Toomey and it wasnt enough, even 50% of the GOP *primary* voters take a RINO over a Conservative

Maybe because Santorum and Bush supported the RINO?

Just like the RNC and Bush are doing in RI even as Chafee is kicking the President in the shins in the Senate?

How about no one has to assume anything and we get a nominee whose record speaks for itself? Perish the thought, I know.

The President is never wrong! He's from Texas! Don't be stupid! Not wrong ever! Don't even whisper a word or wrong doing, or incompetence! Damn it! Maybe you ought to go to DM!

It is The Constitution which says to YOU "trust him" and it also says that the Senate is the only other Constitutional voice to say yea or nay. And it will say "yea" overwhelmingly. It is remarkable that a tiny minority many of whom have never supported the President on anything THINK it can speak for conservatives and attack him.

A win over your own base is always a defeat in the long run.

Nicely said. It sucks, doesn't it?

Amazing how many "conservatives" tell us that they voted for the President yet never can be counted on to have ANY trust in him.

"This was a chance to fight back against the Borking tendency and force the left to stand tall and confirm like the pubbies did for RBG, or else show the public how THEY are the problem....yet Bush blew it".

And finally someone has the balls to come right out and say exactly what most of this madness is about.

This is mostly about having a knock down drag out brawl with the democrats. Miers is just caught in the middle.

I would like nothing more to see the nuclear option not only used, but used over and over again. Fortunately some of us have taken a deep breath, stepped back, and assessed the whole situation before we go blindly charging into the ranks of the enemy.

General Bush would be going to war with a rag tag army comprised of a few warriors, a herd of cats, some blind girl scouts, and a few officers waiting for him to close his eyes just once so they can strangle him in his sleep. And that nuclear bomb we were counting on? It seems the very officers who want to kill Caesar not only have control of the football, they have shared the launch codes with the enemy as well.

Oh yeah! Thats the Army I want fighting my battles for me! Might as well just jump into my pine box and bury myself alive. At least I wont waste the energy of running to my certain death.

Why are you spreading the LIE that Laura said anything other than "perhaps" to a loaded question? Why did Rush spread the same LIE? This is an example of the utter dishonesty of the Antis. So who can believe anything else they say or believe there is any conservatism in their opposition?
