Airstrikes Rock Smurf Village

Here's a poser for you: you're trying to knock together a TV ad highlighting the effects of war on children. What's the plan?

Well, you could go down the traditional route of earnest voice-over accompanying footage of said kids miserably awaiting a better life or, on the other hand, you could arm up a squadron of attack aircraft and go and raze a Smurf village to the ground. Let's face it, it's a toughie.

Not for Unicef Belgium though, which earlier this week reduced an enchanted Smurf hamlet to smouldering rubble - much to the horror of some TV viewers across the Channel - when it aired a 25-second burst of animated warnography on the country's TV screens.

I was unaware of this. However, I still maintain that the annoyance level generated by the dinosaur overrules any call for mercy, at least in this particular case.......

I say kill all them all. Let Hanna-Barbera sort them out.

Feminists should cheer. I can't imagine a more sexist society than one where there is only room for one woman whose defining feature (and name) is linked simply to being female.

When I was in France, the locals used the term derisively as reference to UN troops. Blue beret and helmets earned the title, Smurf.

Jeez, that's lame. An AIRSTRIKE? C'mon. Where's the ineffective peacekeepers standing there in their blue helmets while the enemy pillages the women and rapes the sheep?

Smurf fans, meanwhile, took the attack in stride. On one Web site, a fan blamed the Smurf-hating sorcerer Gargamel for the airstrike and suggested sending in a mission to search for weapons of mass smurfstruction.

I am all for Smurf parodies, even those of an adult nature.

I am troubled, however, of the use of a children's cartoon in this manner by UNICEF. They are taking something nice and light, created for children's enjoyment, ostensibly innocent and are corrupting it.

Should I expect better from the UN, who brought you the blue-helmeted kiddie rapers of Africa?

Of course, the terrorists were hiding behind innocent Smurf women and children, with their Smurffire missles and SMIRV nuclear warheads, planning to carry out Smurfaggedon.
