Teacher Mistakes Boy's Insulin Pump For Phone, Rips It Out

Boy Is Diabetic

POSTED: 11:16 am EDT October 5, 2005

CLERMONT, Fla. -- School officials in Lake County, Fla., said a substitute teacher pulled out a student's insulin pump after mistaking it for a cell phone.

Cliffton Hassam told East Ridge High School officials that his insulin pump began beeping in class Friday. But before he could turn it off, Hassam said substitute teacher Richard Maline ripped it from his leg.

Hassam is diabetic. The insulin pump regulates his blood sugar level.

Lake County School District officials said Maline pulled the pump because he thought the beeping came from a cell phone. They said Maline realized his mistake after he grabbed the pump.

In the written statement Hassam gave to school officials Tuesday, he said the pump fell to the floor and the tube came out of his leg. The high school junior said his blood sugar levels did not return to normal until early this week.

School district officials said Maline has been removed from the pool of substitute teachers.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter, and I pray that new and better treatments will enhance and improve her life so that JD becomes only the minor inconvenience that so many people mistakenly believe it to be.

johnb838, I don't touch the students at all if I can keep from doing so and I don't know where you got the idea that I am any sort of perv. I'm not.

The Am Diabetes Assn needs to do some outreach to idiot teachers if they can't tell a pump from a phone. Although, considering so few phones are attached to people's bodies w/a freakin' cannula, you'd think it wouldn't be an issue.

The teacher was probably thinking of those new phones that kids just plug into the port in the back of their heads.

;)

"BTW, 20+ years ago, when the first IP's first came out, they were the size of a Cracker Jacks box and covered with lights.

The first guy to wear one was eating lunch in a restuarant and looked up to see he was surrounded by a SWAT team.

Seemed someone saw it and thought it was a bomb."

Nice to know that the police department fired 'em. Not nice to realize they became substitute teachers.

OOPS! ! ! Can't be true - the police SWAT team was acting on a tip. That substitute made it's own decision.

Pity the poor taxpayers who will be paying the suit expenses, not the offending substitute.

I'm going to have to get one.

A little over three years ago I went through two courses of prednisone for bronchitis and Bell's palsy. Two weeks after the last course, I ended up in the hospital with a glucose level of 568 and ketoacidosis. After six months of being on insulin injections, my blood sugar went back to normal and has been until Monday. I even check my blood sugar a couple of times a week and it had been perfect until then.

The first time I didn't know the symptoms, which were pretty severe and the various symptoms had begun right at the end of the steroids. I only knew that something was wrong. Monday, out of nowhere I was feeling off. The only symptom that had me decide to check my blood sugar was that my legs were trying to cramp. It was up over 400. So, a visit to the ER and I'm back to dealing with this.

You justified reaching to a student's belt to rip a phone off. Doesn't that "expose" you to some liability even if they aren't a diabetic? I would think teachers would adopt a "keep your hands to yourself" policy in this day and age.

Not that you yourself are a perv... I shouldn't have so implied, just using hyperbole to make my point.

Zero tolerance, you know. Kids can't have that kind of stuff. Now if they need condoms or abortions , that's different.

I didn't justify anything, only explained the teacher's frustration and said that he or she had overreacted. You, on the other hand, said that I had justified doing something which I hadn't, and asked what sort of perv I am. The implication was that there was no doubt as to the question, only the classification.

Just to let you know, I was recently in a class during which a phone, I think, rang. I asked the student to give it up as they aren't supposed to have them turned on in school. She refused. I didn't create a scene, only told her to turn it off and then left a note for the teacher.

I sentence the substitute teacher to a "Brazilian" Bikini wax...maybe that will fix them of this impulsive "lets pull it away" behaviour...

I wholeheartedly disagree. That statement is ignorant and not constituent to the underlying truth. You make a blanket generalization about all teachers here and don't take into consideration the fact that ideologies, personal ethics, and even levels of competency vary widely amongst educators. I, for one, take offense to your assertion and would honestly challenge you to walk into an inner-city 8th grade classroom and maintain an atmosphere conducive to effective, student-centered, higher-order, cognitive learning. The average "Joe Shmoe" off the street could not simply walk into the teaching profession and teach effectively just as the same person could not walk into a law firm and practice law effectively. The arrogance with which you assert your claim is legendary. Granted, some educators don't know what the heck they're doing, I'll give you that, but name one career where inept people can not be found, and I will retract all I have said thus far.

I understand the frustration conservatives have with the education system in this country, I live it on a daily basis. People, let's try not to make blanket generalizations about ALL educators out here in the world. I am conservative and Catholic and do not embrace or espouse the views of the majority of my brethren! I get so sick of the stereotypical phrases or quips on FR which denegrate teachers in a blanket fashion. Please remember that there ARE conservative teachers out here fighting the good fight!!! WE READ THESE POSTS, TOO!!!!

Hang tough, Marty. Sounds like you're one of the good guys out there. Most around here understand that the folks who have the toughest gig are conservative "insiders" in the teaching profession. Keep the faith.

I sub occasionally and class size DOES matter!
Example-yesterday I had a group of about 35 ESL kids who were mostly co-operative but some were doing the"lets mess with the sub"routine and throwing papers and playing on their cell phones.
Ten minutes before class officially ended about ten of the worst fools just got up and walked out of the class.I informed them they did not have my permission to leave but didn't try to stop them physically.
Result?A nice quiet class for the remaining ten minutes!
