Giuliani: I'm Considering 2008 Bid
NewsMax ^ | 10/2/05 | AP

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Sunday he will contemplate next year whether to run for president in 2008.

"I will be considering it next year," Giuliani said during a visit to Denmark. But he added that playing with the idea of running for the Republican nomination for president did not mean he would actually do it.

"Sometime you warm up and get ready and you don't get in and pitch," he told reporters, in a baseball analogy.

Giuliani who was praised for his leadership following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, thanked Danish firefighters who raised $8,400 in support for their New York colleagues.

"To us it was the only thing we could do, raise money and show our support," firefighter Jens Hjorth said.

Eight firefighters from the station raised the money by recording a CD with six songs called "The Skyline Changed." They sold 27,000 copies.

On Sunday, the band members handed over a copy of the CD to Giuliani, who in return gave them a New York Fire Department hat.

Giuliani was in Denmark to speak at a business leadership conference in the Danish capital on Monday.

In 2000, Giuliani ran for the U.S. Senate, but dropped out after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Dear HairOfTheDog,

"Well, I know they're a temperamental bunch that loves to stomp feet and gnash teeth, but I think at their root, they're practical people that vote the options in front of them."

Well, we social conservatives have voted for a lot of Republicans over the past 30 years or so. We've accepted a lot of half a loaves, quarters of loaves, and small crumbs from the table.

But should the party kick us in the teeth by nominating someone who would be a little left of center on social issues for the DEMOCRATS, well, then, we WILL gnash our teeth, and we WILL do the practical thing - we will vote third party or not at all - and the Democrats will win because of it.

If Mr. Giuliani were to win the Republican nomination, social conservatives will have already lost, and lost big. It would be tantamount to telling us that other than our votes, we are no longer welcome in the Republican Party.

If we leave, with our votes, well, what can I tell ya?

Remember what Ronald Reagan said about leaving the Democrat Party. It can work in the other direction, too.

I will NEVER vote for a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, social liberal Republican like Rudy Guiliani.

Just a little difference between him and Hilbeast.

I get a bang out of all of us who wring our hands and complain about the liberal SCOTUS. Haven't all but two been appointed by Republicans?

For those who are insisting that Rudy be pro-life in order to be the GOP nominee, consider: He would appoint law and order judges, who tend to skew anti-abortion.

No more than wishful thinking, without a basis in fact. We can imagine that Rudy would appoint our kind of judge, but unfortunately there is more reason to believe he would do the opposite.

I take him as a man of his word when he said, "I'll uphold a woman's right of choice," and, "I would oppose going back to a day in which abortions were illegal." He even called abortion a "right." (Rudy Giuliani, Sept. 1, 1989)

That is a promise to protect Roe v. Wade, as well as an endorsement of the judicial activism that gave us legalized abortion.

There are a lot of people out there who are conservatives first and Republicans second (if at all) -- they've been supporting the GOP by default since 1980. Giuliani isn't going to get much support from those people.

The Clintons are looking for Republicans to nominate a Bob Dole.

Or an Arlen Specter. Make their day.

Disagree or agree on this, I think the most important thing is that we remain the great friends we always have been.

Absolutely. :-)

So are you saying Alabama or Kansas will vote Democrat?

Giuliani wins because the Electoral College rules.

He wins States that make a Democrat victory impossible.

Rudy Giuliani is going to be the 2008 version of Colin Powell -- that liberal Northeastern "wolf in sheep's clothing" who has a prime speaking role at the Republican convention as a cabinet member-in-waiting (probably U.S. Attorney General, in Rudy's case).

One more fatal flaw for Mr. Giuliani: his 1994 endorsement of Mario Cuomo over George Pataki in the New York governor's race. The national GOP will never let a backstabbing @sshole like that find his way onto a national ticket.

So are you saying Alabama or Kansas will vote Democrat?

No. But Ohio sure might. And perhaps Arkansas or Tennessee, too. What state from Kerry's column in 2004 will go Republican in 2008 just because Rudy's the GOP candidate?

Guiliani does not extend beyond NY.

He may have good PR post 9/11 but he does not have the creditials to extend beyond NY.

People will find out about him and he will loose on the God, Guns and "Gays" vote. Will he come out and be 100% for the Federal Marriage Amendment? Will he oppose civil unions?

He is just not mainstream enough.

Yeah -- when Reagan was a Democrat. By the time 1980 rolled around, Roosevelt had been dead for 35 years, and 95% of the voters had no idea who Roosevelt was running against back in the 1940s.

All those you have not voting for him for various reasons are the same voters.

They will ve vastly outnumbered in more crucial States by those to who those are not issues worth considering.

He may not be nominated. But if he is nominated, he wins.

If neither he nor McCain are nominated, the Republican likely loses- particularly against Hillary.

"Haven't all but two been appointed by Republicans?"

Yeah, but you know how it is. They went to college. They knew how to look conservative, stay under the radar, and fake their way along. But they know better than we do, see? Killing babies is goooood.

in fact, the federal government is never going to be able to do a damn thing about states who adopt civil unions. the best they can do, contain them to that state with the federal DoMA - will go if the SCOTUS tosses that (and they likely will unless Roberts can convince Kennedy to switch over). the only other recourse is a constitutional amendment - and the votes are not there for that.

so tell, what can a president really do about stopping gay marriage? gay marriage is making its greatest strides - with Bush as president. is it working out now? yet you tell me Rudy should be disqualified over gay marriage.

I think Allen can win, perhaps with Rudy on the ticket. but's its going to be damn close - just like last time. and when the pro-lifers find out that Allen is tolerant of abortion for adult women in the first trimester, some may bolt over that anyway.

Yeah, he missed out on the orgy-fests and chug fests and professors who tell their classes to strip their clothes off. Big plus in my book.

When I earned my graduate degree at the University of Denver in the early 1970s, no one with whom I was associated, participated in the activities that you describe.

Do you think that Dr. Condoleezza Rice participated in these activities before she graduated from my alma mater, the University of Denver, in 1974?

One of the co-founders of JD Edwards is now a PHd at the University of Denver. I studied under him while studying for, and earning my MBA. He is a now Dean of the Business School.

He must have learned, and earned, his credentials in the chug/orgy fests; 35 years ago.

I met my wife in 1969 in a Statistics class. She does not drink, nor chug, nor participate in orgies.

Some folks may have a jaundiced eye towards higher education. Probably due to the Stainman that...

end of conversation.

Bad example. The Republican Party never won a national election with Rockefeller on the ticket

I wasn't using Rockefeller as an example of anything, although I could. Giuliani reminds me of Rockefeller because he's an unacceptably moderate Republican---what they called a Rockefeller Republican back then.

As a matter of fact Rockefeller was a perennial contender for the nomination and he was thwarted by more conservative candidates every time---Nixon twice, and Goldwater in '64. (Some irregularities in his domestic life didn't help either.)

If Giuliani seeks the nomination, I'm sure the same thing will happen to him. Republicans prefer conservatives when they can get them.

Yeah, she could bomb asprin factories and pardon terrorists for votes, like her hubby. And reinstate the Gorelick Wall. And shut down Able Danger. And sell nuclear technology for campaign cash from rogue states. Need I go on?

Assuming she's elected, it's highly unlikely such treachery and treason will ever occur again.
