The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

"I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat."

Missouri: Explosion damages road in Binder Park
An act of arson ruined a new plastic culvert pipe at Binder Park Saturday morning. The incident caused a driveway leading to two ball fields to cave in and become impassible.
(...)Park Resources Director J.J. Gates said authorities aren't certain what was placed in the culvert that caused it to explode and catch on fire. But apparently, the explosion was large enough to be seen from Business Highway 50, he said.

Explosion at Arcadia plant injures two
FULL STORY:
An explosion at the Ocean Nutrition Processing Plant at 501 South Washington Street, Arcadia, Wis., occurred on Friday, October 21, at about 12:51 a.m. There were nine employees in the plant at the time of the incident. Two people were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Arcadia, where they were treated and released. There were no other reported injuries. During processing, the spray dryer was in operation and an explosion appears to have occurred in that area. After the explosion occurred the plant was immediately evacuated and 911 was called.
Management from Ocean Nutrition were called to the scene, and they are presently attempting to make a determination as to the cause of the incident.

Michigan:
Small Explosion Blows Window Out Of Home
Authorities are investigating a possible firebombing after an explosive device was detonated at an Ypsilanti Township home early Monday morning.
The device -- possibly an M-80 firework -- blew out the basement window of a home on DeSoto Avenue in West Willow at about 2 a.m., said Washtenaw County Sheriff's Cmdr. Dave Egeler in an Ann Arbor News report. Sheriff's deputies investigating at the scene discovered a Crown Royal liquor bag containing a plastic bag filled with gasoline, according to Egeler.

Mississippi:
Officers Investigate Ballpark Explosion
A loud explosion shook part of Vicksburg Saturday night. Around 9 p.m., a blast in Halls Ferry Ballpark left a cloud of smoke and shook the fire department nearby.
The explosion could be heard as far away as a 1/4 mile from the park at the Vicksburg Evening Post. Police investigating the scene found the remains of used beer bottles and chemicals. The explosion occurred near the main baseball field of the park, behind the tennis courts

Indiana: Driver finds object resembling pipe bomb
A device made to look like a pipe bomb found at First and Ohio streets brought out a State Police bomb disposal team Monday morning and forced police to reroute traffic at a busy downtown intersection for about an hour.
George Ralston, chief of Terre Haute police, said the device was taken as evidence after an explosives disposal technician determined it was harmless. Police were investigating why and how it came to be there.

16-year-old survives pipe bomb attack in Desert Hot Springs
A pipe bomb thrown into a home exploded just feet away from a sleeping 16-year-old girl. It happened early this morning in Desert Hot Springs.

German court convicts "Zarqawi team" for bomb plans (targeted the Jews in Germany)

DUESSELDORF, Germany (Reuters) - Four Arab men accused of planning to bomb Jewish targets in Germany on the orders of militant Islamist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi were found guilty on Wednesday at the end of a marathon trial.

"In this case, Abu Musad al-Zarqawi should also be sitting on the defendants' bench," Judge Ottmar Breidling told the court in his explanation of the verdict.

The men received jail sentences of between five and eight years.

Evidence in the trial, which started in February 2004, included wiretapped conversations in which Jordanian militant Zarqawi discussed with group members the state of preparations for the attacks, using codewords such as "honey" and "medicine" to refer to explosives.

"I swear to you, Sheikh, I swear that if you ordered me to die, I would do it," Dhess allegedly told Zarqawi in one of the intercepted conversations in October 2001.

The prosecution case was based on 55 days of testimony from Abdalla, who briefly served as a bodyguard to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. He is now living in Germany under a new identity to protect him against reprisals.

AMTRAK TRAIN DELAYED BY BOMB THREAT

WESTERLY, R.I. -- An Amtrak train from Boston to Washington was delayed for more than two hours in Westerly on Tuesday evening as law enforcement investigated a bomb threat, Amtrak and police officials said.

A man called Amtrak in Boston and said there was an explosive device "set to go off" on Train 177, which left Boston at 5:35 p.m. carrying 115 passengers.

The train was stopped in Westerly, the next available stop, at about 7:30 where passengers disembarked. The train was moved to a siding away from residential areas where Amtrak security personnel as well as local, state and federal agencies using bomb-sniffing dogs conducted a thorough search of the eight-car train, Westerly police Capt. Lauren Matarese said.

Passengers' hand-held luggage was also searched before they were allowed to get back on the train, she said.

All packages and bags were accounted for and no explosives were found, she said.

The train continued on its way at about 9:49, Amtrak spokesman Cliff Black said. Five other trains were also delayed because of the incident, he said.

There were no arrests. An investigation into the incident continues.

Four Arabs convicted in German plot

DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — A court Wednesday convicted four Arab men of plotting to attack Jewish targets in Germany and found three of them guilty of being members of a terrorist organization.

Mohamed Abu Dhess, Ashraf al-Dagma and Ismail Shalabi were given sentences ranging from six to eight years in prison for their roles in planning the attacks and for forming a terrorist cell of al-Tawhid in Germany.

A fourth man, Djamel Mustafa, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in plotting the attacks and for supporting a terrorist organization.

Al-Tawhid is a radical Palestinian network believed to be linked to al-Qaida and headed by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who also leads al-Qaida in Iraq.

All three had rejected the charges against them.

"I never planned attacks against Jewish, Israeli or any other targets in Germany," al-Dagma told the court last week.

When the judge read out the sentences Wednesday, the men protested loudly. Al-Dagma stormed out of the courtroom into the hallway and security guards excluded him from the rest of the proceedings.

Much of the prosecution's case against the four was built around testimony from Shadi Abdellah, who was arrested at the same time as the others in April 2002 and confessed to plotting to attack Jewish targets, saying the group discussed Berlin's Jewish Museum and a Jewish-owned club or bar in Duesseldorf.

Judge Ottmar Breidling was sharply critical of German immigration authorities, saying that Abdellah and Abu Dhess had been able to use false names and life histories to get permission to live in Germany and receive social assistance.

"Both al-Tawhid cases need not have happened if immigration law had been conscientiously applied," Breidling said.

Abdellah admitted being part of the al-Tawhid group, saying he befriended al-Zarqawi in 2000 while in Afghanistan to undergo al-Qaida paramilitary training. He also said he served as a bodyguard to Osama bin Laden.

Abdellah told authorities the Duesseldorf-based cell operated largely apart from its parent group and chose its own targets and arranged for its own explosives and weapons.

In exchange for his testimony at this and two other German terror trials, Abdellah was given a reduced sentence of four years and was released in November after serving about half his time. He was also put in Germany's witness protection program.
