Schwarzenegger vetoes gay marriage bill
MSNBC ^ | AP

Posted on 09/29/2005 4:16:31 PM PDT by minus_273

SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger followed through Thursday on his promise to veto a bill to legalize gay marriage in California, saying the issue should be decided by voters or the courts.

“This bill simply adds confusion to a constitutional issue,” the Republican governor said in a veto message. “If the ban of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional this bill is not necessary. If the ban is constitutional this bill is ineffective.”

• SB 565 by Senator Carole Migden (D-San Francisco) - Property tax reappraisal exclusion: domestic partners.

Domestic Partners who transfer property between one another do not face a reevaluation of property tax level. Since we have domestic partnerships in this state, this is a fair change. You probably hate it because it doesn't use tax policy to punish behavior you look down upon be it an elderly domestic partner couple or homosexuals. Don't like "domestic partner" policy? Gather initiative signatures and get the votes.

• SB 973 by Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) - Public employees' retirement: domestic partners.

Brings teacher retirement rules into compliance with domestic partner law. Yawn.

• AB 228 by Assemblymember Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) - Transplantation services: human immunodeficiency virus.

This one bothers me since I don't know that HIV+ patients should be in the same transplantation league with non-HIV+ patients. I realize that isn't "fair" but an HIV patient's system is compromised thus putting a scarce and critical organ in their body over choosing a healthier patient's body is piss poor use of resources. I'll cop to being slandered as callous on this one.

• AB 1142 by Assemblymember Marvyn Dymally (D-Compton) - HIV/AIDS: African-Americans: statewide initiative.

Statistics show blacks aren't getting the message about AIDS. IMHO, it's a sub-culture issue having to do with machismo, aversion to condom use or masturbation and "down low" homosexual activities caused by strong anti-homosexual feeling. It isn't (just?) homosexual blacks but blacks overall not getting the message. I've no problem with efforts to target a group with education to avoid a costly and terminal health crisis. If it works it saves lives and saves health care dollars in the long term. If we can get blacks back into two-parent traditional families and away from the hip-hop "baby mamma" phenomena we could do them a lot of good and seriously reduce HIV's spread in that ethnic group.

• AB 1400 by Assemblymember John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) - Civil Rights Act.

Yet another general anti-discrimination bill. Zzz.

Let the courts decide... and that's OK?

It's obvious , we the people don't count anymore.

----

I call it the way I see it, as an act of political posturing, he is running for re-election and can do what he will.

----

btw, Are either of you gamblers, just curious?

If so, why do you think everyone should just do what you do because you think it's OK?

If not, can I borrow some money?

---

Oh, and I support Prop 73.

---

and Thanks newzjunkey, for showing your true colors.

Or am I discriminating against you for singling you out for supporting more rights for domestic partners? We can afford whether they deserve it or not, right?

Look: domestic partners are not exclusively homosexual in this state and are the LAW in California.

Don't like it? Fine. Get yourself initiative petitions and earn the votes to overturn domestic partnership by amending the state constitution.

Here is a sixth one. You like this one too?

SIGNED TODAY: AB 1586 by Assemblymember Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) - Insurers: health care service plans: discrimination.

http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=2664

California Enacts Koretz Bill For Major Transgender Protections
By California Political Desk
September 29, 2005

(West Hollywood) – California became the first state in the nation to ban denials of insurance coverage based solely on a person’s transgender status when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation today authored by Assemblymember Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood). AB 1586 adds gender and gender identity to existing anti-discrimination provisions in California laws regulating insurance companies and health care service plans. The new law will take effect January 1, 2006 and prohibits insurers and health plans from discriminating on the basis of gender identity in contracts and policies or in the provision of benefits or coverage.

Sad but true. They'll sit on the hands and attack Arnold for not being ideologically pure enough until they get another Dem into the governor's office next year.

Oh, and they'll put up candidates who have no chance in hell of winning like Bill Simon. I'll be surprised if they don't attempt a coup against incumbent Arnold in the GOP primary next year.

The GOP are its own worst enemy here in California.

Hanity has pro-homo Drier on right now. (I wonder why?) Basically a sob-pity interview because this pro-homo marriage californian "republican" was not selected to sub for Delay.

ooooooo.... ooooooo...

Show me your piles of new paper debt this Gub is building and we'll all gather round and burn it for heat and light when the solar panels fail or the sun don;t shine..and then you'll blame the ideologically pure for that too, I betcha?

and you think no GOP Gub primary is a smart move, when a lot can happen to the Gub between now and next
November.

Oh , almost forgot..

The GOP are its own worst enemy here in California.

exactly what do you mean by that one? are you a white knight of the GOP and anyone who doesn't tow yours and their line, right or wrong , is a black knight?

Like I said, your true colors are showing.

Let the courts decide... and that's OK?

It's obvious , we the people don't count anymore.

Bull. We have the initiative process. We have the vote. Of course we count!

I call it the way I see it, as an act of political posturing, he is running for reelection and can do what he will.

Political posturing? He's consistent with what he campaigned upon in the recall. I didn't realize that amounted to political posturing. Bush's lame claim last for amending the federal constitution to stop homosexual marriage or Social Security reform pandering while refusing to introduce or name a bill he supports *is* political pandering. What has *he* done? At least you can point to real things Arnold's done: vetoed driver's licenses for illegals, repealed car tax, vetoed homosexual marriage, vetoed minimum wage hikes, campaigned successfully to protect 3-strikes, improved the business climate, is taking on the union vice grip on state politics, endorsed Prop 73... Hell, Arnold actually *knows* how to use his veto pen. Bush doesn't!

btw, Are either of you gamblers, just curious?

Sorry, I don't gamble or drink alcohol either.

If not, can I borrow some money?

Get a job?

Oh, and I support Prop 73.

Good. I hope it passes. And 74, 75, 76 and 77 too. Don't forget to circulate CA Border Police initiative petitions. I have and they're turned in. and Thanks newzjunkey, for showing your true colors.

Or am I discriminating against you for singling you out for supporting more rights for domestic partners? We can afford whether they deserve it or not, right?

I have no dog in the domestic partner fight. As for "afford" I think it depends on what you mean by that. My view is that we're all better off supporting partnering up of couples. I take a libertarian view on my fellow American's decisions on coupling. I've ranted several times that homosexuals should adopt traditional heterosexual courtship activities and values. If that group intends to thrive they need to grow beyond their view of sexuality as political protest. It would slash HIV and other STI/STD rates and save us medical costs.

We dodged a bullet with Rep. Drier being passed over. KFI's John-and-Ken show said this afternoon it was specifically because Drier is "mushy" on illegal immigration which isn't compatible with the sense of the House GOP.

wow these match almost the same points someone else tossed out earlier..

What has *he* done? At least you can point to real things Arnold's done: vetoed driver's licenses for illegals, repealed car tax, vetoed homosexual marriage, vetoed minimum wage hikes, campaigned successfully to protect 3-strikes, improved the business climate, is taking on the union vice grip on state politics, endorsed Prop 73.

Nope, no talking points being passed around going on here.

Uhh,, aren't civil unions the same as domestic partnerships? enlighten me if they aren't? Thanks
