SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger followed through Thursday on his promise to veto a bill to legalize gay marriage in California, saying the issue should be decided by voters or the courts.
“This bill simply adds confusion to a constitutional issue,” the Republican governor said in a veto message. “If the ban of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional this bill is not necessary. If the ban is constitutional this bill is ineffective.”

Leno was on the radio this morning claiminng the Governor was under a lot of pressure to sign the bill. He didn't get that right, either.
Good for Arnold.
"I swear I will not kill anyone."
The good folks of California voted to ban same sex marriage! We can't get more cut and dry than that!
Let's be polite to the gay community and inform them that they can move to Canada, get married, and reside there.
This vetoe by Arnold must be driving Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein and Howard Dean looney!

Disappointing day for California bashers.
I don't think it really mattered what he did today or Gastric Nuisance did early this year, both decisions were and are mute and are for political gain only, imo.
As things sit now, it is up to the court,, he could have let it set on his desk and done nothing. I don't recall it haveing overwhelming support or that it as vetoproof.
If I am wrong, correct me. Please.
In gfact, he may have effectively killed any possibilities of gaining support from gay folks for his initiaitves by acting as he has, so which is more important long-term?
The "will of the sheeple" is what elects the folks to the legislature in the first place.

Thank YOU Arnold!!!!!
And, in other news.... Schwarzenegger signs five other GLBT backed bills:
Governor Schwarzenegger has signed 47 bills and vetoed 52:
Bills Signed:
(snip)
SB 565 by Senator Carole Migden (D-San Francisco) - Property tax reappraisal exclusion: domestic partners.
SB 973 by Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) - Public employees' retirement: domestic partners.
AB 228 by Assemblymember Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) - Transplantation services: human immunodeficiency virus.
AB 1142 by Assemblymember Marvyn Dymally (D-Compton) - HIV/AIDS: African-Americans: statewide initiative.
AB 1400 by Assemblymember John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) - Civil Rights Act.
Long or short term doesn't matter. He stood on principle.
That's a head-cratcher for this state. They will vote against DL for illegal aliens and a ban on gay marriages, but will reflexively send lefties to the state legislature
You used the 'P' word, I'm telling the CA GOP leadership..
Oh, strike that, they don't care about principle anymore, imo.
Political ploy, pure and simple.
California Government,, still singing in the Key of D.. Thanks
In FaiRness,
The Governor has received 961 bills in the 2005 legislative session.
He has taken action on 523 bills, signed 421 and vetoed 102.
He vetoed an Internet Safety bill , btw.. Look both ways before posting,, I always do, who needs a law telling ya too.
And while everybody is cheering this and looking the other way, he signs a bunch more
GLBT legislation giving gays all the rights of married people.
