A bunch of n00b questions:

What does it take to be "killed" on FR? Does someone just have to write something stupid, offensive, or both?

And what, exactly, are the rules of engagement when it comes to trolls? I'm certain that I can spot one, but having stalked the prey, how would I go about pouncing on one?

Who exactly exterminates the vermin? Is that the task of the almighty mods?

No one can say with absolute certainty what is required to earn a ZOT, as there are several Almighty Mods, and each operates under unique paradigms.

Basically, though... rule of thumb... someone has to say something REALLY dumb, and REALLY offensive, and ABSOLUTELY without redeeming qualities.
It is an aggravating factor to have a brand-new account when this is done.
It is an aggravating factor to parrot DNC talking points.

Correction:

On a discussion thread recently about a tethered platform stretching from an ocean base to further than the geo-synchronous orbit of communication satellites, I made a comment about a similar “skyhook” for the Moon. I said that the rotational speed of the Moon made it impossible to have the same kind of arrangement.

I was wrong.

It is true that the Moon rotates slowly. Under normal circumstances, this would preclude the building of a “beanstalk.” A similar situation obtains on Mercury; too slow a rotation.

But there is a factor in regard to the Moon I had not previously considered. The Moon is tidally locked to the Earth.

This means that a platform could be built on the near side of the Moon, reaching up, and past, the point where gravity begins to pull things toward the Earth. This is one of the Lunar LaGrangian points.

If a tethered platform were to be constructed on the Moon’s near side, and reaching toward Earth, it would have to rival in total length the tower coming from Earth’s equator, but it need not be quite as robust.

It would also not be able to launch items into interplanetary orbits; anything released from the upper platform would simply fall to Earth.

At least getting things from the Moon to the Earth could be made as simple as an elevator trip, (and an incendiary re-entry).

If towers were constructed on both the Earth and the Moon, packages could be interchanged with relative ease. One would allow a cargo item to be released from the Earth tower at a point where its momentum would carry it to the Moon’s tower. Similarly, a package from the Moon would have to be timed to be intercepted at the appropriate point on the Earth tower.

Essentially, cargo could be shipped from the Earth to the Moon, and from the Moon to the Earth, for no more than the cost of operating the elevator shuttles on the two towers. (Note: The two towers.)

I publish this correction here on the Undead Thread because no one ever reads what is posted here, so I won’t have to be embarrassed about having been wrong publicly.

Now back to your regular activities. For stargazers, please note that the full Moon ahead of us will be enjoying a partial eclipse tonight, and if you will look over toward Venus, that bright star nearby is Antares.

Is that even brighter red thing, next to Antares, Mars? Antares was named as Anti-mars, or the 'other' Mars. Maybe I am seeing the wrong red star: there are only a handful of stars visible at a time these days.

A lot of it depends on how long you have been here. The ones with a 1997,98 & 99 signup date can get away with a lot more then the rest of us because they have a track record. Still, there are limits. Anything racist will get you blasted. Also never ever insult the troops.

Stupid will get you set in the corner for a time out. Unless you signed up only a short while ago.

That depends on your personal style. I tend to ping to the troll and the Admin Mod unless it is something really disgusting. If it is going to reflect badly on FR or if it is obscene then I hit abuse. That gets a quicker response.

Horkheimer: Greetings, greetings fellow star gazers. This month Mars dominates the eastern sky in early evening and is almost at its brightest as it continues to come closer each week. And next week the Moon not only visits the planet named for the goddess of love Venus but also parks incredibly close to the star antares whose name literally means the "Rival of Mars".

O.K., we've got our skies set up for 10 p.m. your local daylight savings time this week and next facing east where the brightest object you'll see will be reddish gold 4,000 mile wide Mars which by Halloween will be the third brightest object in the sky outshone only by the Moon and Venus. It's racing toward us and at the beginning of October is only 49 million miles away. But by the end of the month on October 29th, the date of its closest approach to Earth, it will be 6 million miles closer, only 43 million miles away. And that's close for Mars. In fact, it won't be this close again until 2018. And if you compare it to where it was way back 13 months ago on September 6th, 2004 it was 248 million miles away 205 million miles farther away than it will be on October 29th.

Right now you can easily see some detail on its surface through a small telescope. But please don't make the mistake of thinking you are going to see it the way we do with the hubble space telescope. Remember it's only a 4,000 mile wide planet, only half the size of our 8,000 mile wide Earth. Now, just for fun, if you want to see how Mars usually looks you can go out just after sunset where you will see its sometimes look alike rival. Let me show you. O.K., we've got our skies still set up for this week and next but instead of facing east we're facing southwest where you'll be absolutely dazzled by Earth sized 8,000 mile wide Venus which is always the brightest planet and which this week is only 86 1/2 million miles away.

Then if you look up to Venus' left you'll see the reddish gold star that marks the heart of Scorpius the scorpion and whose name literally means the rival of Mars because Mars often looks just about the same color and brightness, although right now Antares can't even touch Mars in brilliance. And when Mars is far away from us on the other side of its orbit it actually becomes much dimmer than Antares. So sometime this week and next visually compare Antares' and Mars' brightness. And in case you're one of those who has a hard time making sure you've found the right star or planet, well next Thursday October 6th an exquisite crescent Moon complete with earthshine will be parked right beneath Venus and on Friday October 7th will almost slam into Antares. Once again, Moon and Venus, October 6th, Moon and Antares, October 7th. Wow! What a way to open October, the Moon visits two exquisite objects and Mars enters the final stretch. Keep looking up!

I was referring to your local news. Ours generally report when shots are heard in town.

Although I had a murder happen about two blocks from where I lived and the closest there was to a report was a small discreet obituary four days later.
