Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Does Blanco think she can force them back?
Is she talking about the people whose houses weren't damaged? She cannot possibly be talking about the 9th ward, right?
This probably explains the Lafitte flooding - a levee break Looking at a map, it might just be the southern "island" portion of Lafitte that flooded, since a canal bisects the village.

Hah! Men who arrive with Francis the First,,,make me,,,well,,,hot!!!
Liquid Wrench works pretty good with just about anything.
Yep, you have my word on it. The folks who stayed where those who refused to leave. Everybody who wanted to leave, got out seemlessly, without those annoying waits that one saw in Texas. It as all in the plan, which was executed exactly as planned. That is what she said, albeit a bit less seemlessly than I just typed it out, LOL. Blanco isn't the most articulate politician on the fruited plain, and as someone noted, she seems to be in a continuous overwrought state, a veritable paradigm of a man's idea of a wife from hell.
Tidy whiteys or boxers?
OMG.........she is on CNN now, saying the same thing to Aaron Brown.
She has obviously completely unhinged.
OK, everyone, I now have some pictures for y'all.
Dallas got a bunch of Federal money to build levees on the Trinity River. What did we do with it? Sorry about the blurriness, I took the pictures with a slow shutter speed at dusk.

We built an enormous levee 50-60 feet taller than the flood plain (on the left), a quarter to half a mile from the river bed, which is 10-15 feet below the flood plain (it's behind those trees on the left of the picture). Then we built another one on the opposite side of the river to the same spec.
If we can do this in Dallas, why didn't NO, which has FAR more problems with flooding, do it? Where did all the money go?
And why didn't the citizens demand an accounting?
I have been trying to remember what monies come to the states for poor people, women and children.
The health care system here gets alot of federal money for the poor. And the Charity Hospital system is rife with corruption. Unbelievable cronyism. Some supplier of one of the state hospitals was charging like outrageous sums for toilet paper. He was a relative of a state official.
Maybe others know the funding stuff better than I. All I know is health care and a bit about education.
I heard an interesting story about Acadian Ambulance,,,it has huge contracts to transport people, to hospitals, etc. One of the nursing homes had a contract with them to transport and during the evac, they wanted to take one patient at a time. Thus making a big killing. I think to take someone to a hospital the charge is around 500 bucks.
Now guess who is a part owner. I won't say it but look it up. Acadian Ambulance.
I think she wants them back in trailers. To wait on new public housing.
They want to build trailor parks, to park the folks in. Not near any jobs? So much the better. Just more federal dollars, and more dependency. Laissez les bon temps roulez. Ya, my comment is somewhat hyperbolic, but not enough to make the comment anything other than trenchant in my biased opinion. :)
well, it was different from that but I won't start it again or we will be kicked off summarily.
And the levee is on the right side, not the left.
About 100 billion is pumped in for special needs students from the feds, on a nationwide basis.
My guess is the population of special needs kids in NO is enormous.
WIC, AFDC, Food Stamps, for starters.
Thank you. My dignity has been restored. So that means I don't have to talk about the runaway bride, right?
Yup. And it seems like a third of the population has medical problems. It must be the diet or something. Not enough California nouvelle cuisine. It seems to be diabetes hell.
