Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

OH, YEAH! The place was reported as being completely evacuated at least a day ago (if not longer).

Now there's a blazing conflageration, and there's people in it. Is this the same guy who was standing on the beach a few days ago in the beating (sledghammering) sun, wearing a slicker (that's a "mack" for your Britons, er, "raincoat" for you Yanks, and I'm baffled what to say for you Fillipinos), but anyways (...now annoyed...), look, I'm trying to tell you something...

O.k. I see how ya are...

Remember Scrooged, the movie? They stapled the hat on the mouse... Maybe Shep should staple it.

Oh pray for Galveston! I love that city - my husband and I honeymooned there, and we have always enjoyed the Strand. :(

I think Shep is trying to catch up to Anderson Cooper..we had Scud Studs in Iraq War 1..what name should the hurricane reporters get?
Especially those standing without major protection in the middle of a street?

it appears that Shep moved because the satellite guy didn't want to lose his million dollar satellite truck.

They can happen anywhere but are most likely in area northeast of the center--roughly 11 o'clock through 4 o'clock.

Allen County Tornado Warning:

Oakdale is about 40 miles North East of Lake Charles on the road between Lake Charles and Alexandria.

The bad news is that Fort Polk is about 20-30 miles away...

Might need some extra prayers...

A lot of St Tammany parish evacuated. There was flooding near the lakeshore due to the storm surge. Not much left to lose right near the lake there anyway. We haven't heard any reports of anything more damaging than slight flooding.

I lived in Lafayette one summer many years ago. Hubby was working offshore. We were newlyweds. Had a little garage apt. It was nice.

Shep and his cameraman are going to blow away if he doesn't get inside, for crying out loud. He's stuck on stupid for sure.
