Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Hurray! I'm alive, still have power and water, and am just trying to shake myself awake to believe these aforementioned blessings.
Did we have a hurricane?
Anybody want to buy some water?
Thank you to everyone who offered prayers and good thoughts to all of us who were expecting to kiss our posteriors goodbye a little over 24 hours ago. Prayers up for all those still suffering from Rita.
*Staying sealed in until the "all clear" in a few hours.*
Mega white-stripe-down-the-back DITTO!
These storms are the great levelers, aren't they. Suffering and shock knows no politics, like death it is an equalizer.
"And then they comfort themselves by buying Louis V bags "
One fraction of 1% of people doing that and you taint your whole commentary to exclude the other 99.999% who are truly suffering with nobility and sacrifice?
I knew a woman who drank rum, a real louse. She was a Rummy Chick. Rummy Chicks are all drunks and lushes.
Nice tidbit of info- Neil was just interviewing one of the hurricane pilots- he said during the landfall flight the president called them- wanted to know where the eye was hitting- how it looked etc. He said the president was very hands-on.
Take that- SMACK- MSM:)
Well, ours had people in the storm for sure, but they didn't have anybody looking ridiculous like Shep trying to anchor while getting the crap beaten out of him by the wind and rain, that's for sure. I won't forget THAT sight soon, that's for sure. I just wish I'd seen him getting blown down.
No new levee breaks in NOLA. Looking better, 3" rain expected today.
Partial collapse at Galveston bar.
The surf looks nearly normal now but muddy, beach showing.
Looks like 2-3 waves.
The sun just shined through.
Yes, I saw that. It's remarkable, and a good sign. Each of us would probably be surprised to find out how many others can see through the lies but are reluctant to be the first to announce it.
Find a post where ANYONE states that EVERYONE is like that.
Your OWN OFFICIALS stated that bus drivers were AFRAID to drive the buses because of the fear of danger from YOUR OWN CITIZENS.
You harangue people and tell they they have no right to judge someone because that poor person lost everything and is so bereft.
Sorry, but we DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO JUDGE someone who spends 2000 on a Louis V bag. I bet many people who actually donated money don't have Louis V bags.
God bless you for caring for another human being in time of their need.
As Jay Leno said the other night, "Do you think this is a good time to be taking "God" out of the pledge of allegiance?"
That's a variation of "There are no atheists in the foxholes".
Right.
I'm so glad to hear your sister in law called and your family is safe! You must be so relieved.
I have to check into weather report, someone said on another thread it could go reverse and back out to gulf? Did you hear anything about that?
Great story on Max Mayfield! Thank you for sharing. I did not know that about him.
Yup, Cboldt posted that a while back.
That puts Lake P 10 feet above sea level, which means that St. Bernards will flood to there, and if they don't stop the London Canal breach, then downtown NO floods to there too.
I'm sure there's something wrong with my math, there's no way that NO is going to flood to Mississippi River levels....completely, unerringly, totally positive...
Any word on how many historic buildings burned in Galveston last night?
Glad to hear you both survived the initial onslaught.
I ask that you (and other TX & LA FReepers) sign in on Howlin's "check-in" thread when you get a chance...

I was over there looking for you, and some others, as soon as I awoke, and was concerned...
Actually, one of the great things about the Honda Fit is the ability to have essentially a flat cargo area all the way to the front seats when you fold down the rear seat. It's so roomy that you could probably put a small Toro riding mower back there!
Um not according to Gov Blanco. She said in her CNN interview 1st week in Sept that she asked for additional FEMA support on Wed. FEMA says Thru the 1st. Don't quite know what your source for "Monday" is.
Jay Leno! LOL! :)
